Rousimar Palhares vs. Dave Branch
Johny Hendricks vs. Paulo Thiago

"Welterweights Johny Hendricks (9-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) and Paulo Thiago (13-3, 3-3 UFC) have been targeted to meet at UFC on Versus 3.

Sources close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that verbal agreements are in place with contracts on the way.

UFC on Versus 3 takes place March 3 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky., and airs live on Versus.

It's unknown whether Hendricks vs. Thiago will replace a scheduled welterweight bout between Matt Brown and Matt Riddle that was thrown into the lurch when Riddle injured his right hand and was forced to bow out.

Regardless, both men are hungry for redemption coming into the spring fight. Hendricks experienced the first loss of his professional career in his most recent appearance when he was outpointed by Rick Story at The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale. The setback snapped a four-fight streak earned after his migration from the WEC to the UFC.

Thiago, meanwhile, has his back to the cage. Despite an all-out effort that won him "Fight of the Night" honors, he was outpointed by the persistent Diego Sanchez this past October at UFC 121. That compounded a decision loss to division standout Martin Kampmann in his previous fight.

Sanchez and Kampmann are now scheduled to headline UFC on Versus 3.

A member of Brazil's elite special police squad B.O.P.E., Thiago burst onto the UFC scene with a first-round knockout of Josh Koscheck. He was outpointed in a subsequent performance to Koscheck teammate Jon Fitch, but rebounded afterward with two consecutive wins against Jacob Volkmann and AKA regular Mike Swick. "

Yeah definitely a hard fight but thiago has a problem with strong wrestlers but he could catch Hendricks in a submission

FOTN right here.

If thiago has improved his gas tank then he can win. he stuffed all of diegos takedowns and even took diego himself down in the first round of their meeting.

i hope thiago pulls it off or he's out of the UFC.

This is a pretty fantastic fight in my view. Hard, hard, hard to call. But I like Thiago to latch on a sub. Don't think Hendricks has the sub D and knowledge that Diego and Kampmann possess.

He won't get cut. Dana and especially Joe Silva like to keep him around as a gatekeeper, especially considering he's so exciting and aggressive and is always going for finishes 100% of the time, so much to the point where he looks like a rookie in positioning because he's always going for subs. He's got 3 fight bonuses and even with 3 in a row, they'll keep him around, probably a step down in competetition though to get him on track.

After his FOTN performance against Diego, Dana gave him a new deal, so it'd be pretty strange to re-sign a guy only to cut him a fight later. Only way I see that happening is if he stinks out the joint in a decision loss.

i think thiago will win by darce choke if johnny tries to always take him down, and if he tries to stand and bang with paulo he'll be drooling. paulo is pretty much a gatekeeper but he is still a good one

I agree, Thiago by D'arce. I love watching a fighter that uses the D'arce as deftly as Thiago does. It's my favorite submission.

Thiago needs a win!

Shaping up to be a pretty decent card.

Yeah. I'm intrigued by that Branch v Palhares matchup as well.

Would be a very interesting fight indeed.

Hendricks dissapointed me against Story. I thought he will use his wrestling to control the fight but it he seemed very slow in his movements for me.

Thiago doesn't fight at a high pace, so that could be a good thing for Hendricks.

I don't think Hendrick wants to fight on the ground against Thiago though. Maybe if he has Thiago hurt...but Thiago has far superior BJJ and he could sub Johnny.

I like this fight.

.
