Well Ali wasn't the greatest fighter of all-time in boxing, everyone knows that, including Ali himself, who said Ray Robinson was the greatest fighter of all time. Ali may be top 10. The reason he has such a legacy, was the era in which he fought, the Muslim stand, in a time Malcolm X was assasinated, changing his name from that given to him by his 'slave masters', in a time when Luther King was big, in addition to winning the gold medal at the Olympic and throwing it away, the stand against the Vietnam war and fighting in a golden age in the heavyweights at the time (Frazier, Foreman etc). It's the entire story, not that he was simply the best fighter. You can't create that, it just has to happen, external factors in life and your reaction to them.

This.

Everyone seems to automatically assume when someone says someone is the "next Ali" they mean that person will go on to be the GOAT. Whether Buffer meant it literally or not I don't know but Ali wasn't even top 3 all-time.

well to be fair he did say in the future he sees him as being the ali of mma

and the way he said it made it seem like he meant he would be the ali of mma because of his looks, his smile, his aura, he has charisma, i think he meant he would be the ali of mma in terms of charisma and getting ppl to notice him

and also because he will be a top guy

Man you guys are seriously delusional...not only is Ali widely considered the greatest HW of all time (some MAY argue Joe Louis but not many), he is widely considered top 3 ATG (behind Sugar Ray Robinson and Henry Armstrong)....this is not just my opinion but the opinion of many within the boxing media and boxing pundits.

What the hell has Jon Jones done to be even compared to an ATG? the guys he beat while dominating weren't even top 10 guys...lets see Jon Jones go on 2 massive title runs through a deep division (which given the LHW div is) and then they can remotely consider it.

Yeah going a little far, but he is prob just excited, but yeah, i see Jones maybe even finishing this the first round, people dont understand his potential yet

Agree on JJ part.

But don't talk to me about boxing pundits, I have been in the boxing circles my entire life. Many not only include Louis as better, but you are more likely to find Duran, Leonand (both Benny and Ray), Pep, Ezzard Charles, Joe Gans, Harry Greb et al above Ali. He is one of the best, not the best, that's the point I'm making.

No not widely. Anyone who knows anything about the history of boxing puts SRR, SRL, Greb and Duran above Ali. It's just how it is.

And I have Marciano above everyone. Not the best in technique but you can not beat his raw neanderthal form!

Nonsense.
This.
I think JBJ is an awesome prospect who does have really good chances at becoming the UFC's LHW champion one day. But comparing him to Ali already? Give me a break.

Jones is one of a kind I believe, a truly special fighter.

You can throw Vera's name out there or Machidas, but they didnt dominate their opponents quite the way Jones has been doing. Jones just absolutely wrecks any one that stands in front of him.

And when you consider that hes only been doing this for such a limited time and the fact that hes so young, its just ridiculous. Jones is going to be champ soon and he'll hold it for some time.
I have to disagree about the machidas comment.. machida had what a 15 win streak? and it was not against cans. Watch the machida and thiago silva fight and tell me that was not total domination and thiago is a way bigger name then all of jones opponents combined.
