Jake Shields brings in Chael Sonnen; Ben Askren

UFC 129 – Jake Shields reveals he’s bringing in Chael Sonnen and Ben Askren to help him prepare for St. Pierre
February 8, 2011 All MMA News, UFC 2 Comments
Former Strikeforce middleweight champion, Jake Shields has today revealed that he’s bringing in former UFC middleweight title contender, Chael Sonnen and Bellator stand-out, Ben Askren to help him prepare for Georges St. Pierre at UFC 129 in April.
The UFC welterweight number one contender revealed the news to The Fight Show earlier today who in turn posted it via their Twitter page.
Shields is coming off a less than impressive split decision win over Martin Kampmann late last year on his octagon debut. Prior to that he’d looked good at 185 pounds, dominating the legendary Dan Henderson on route to a five round unanimous decision win.

Hmm.
I dunno but the one person in the world at 185 who I think would beat GSP dominantly is Chael Sonnen. The combos, the aggressiveness, the power he brought against Silva was unreal and this could really benefit Shields. What his grappling lacks is exactly what Chael exceeds at: power takedowns and GnP.

He should focus more on the striking/stand-up...
That's where he's gonna get *raped*!
Or maybe he's thinking something like a *POKER ALL IN* - "f**k the stand up. I'll sacrifice the stand-up/striking completely and focus on wrestling/grappling 110%"
Only ptoblem is: GSP is an the best MMA wrestler at WW and his grappling is amazing also.

I don't see why people think Chael could defeat GSP. All GSP needs to do really, is focus everything on his TDD.
If he manages to keep this fight standing, Chael is more then outclassed. He also could put Chael on his butt too mix things up a little. Who would also only give up maybe 20lbs wich won't change the fight outcome.

I think it is a smart move. He isn't going to catch up to GSP's stand up in the time he has. He needs to learn Chael's "Just get them down" approach that shuts everyone down.

Good move on Shields's part, his only hope is to take down GSP and work him on the ground. Askren is a beast (ive seen him wrestle live in college) and Sonnen is a great MMA wrestler as well, so this is good training for Shields.
He'll still lose though...

this dude needs to be learning some damn boxing to prevent GSP from jabbing him to death. His wrestling is already good and wont get much better.

Chael Sonnen is a good striker, the combos he threw against Silva were epic and he was the first man to straight up drop him.
Jake Shields isn't a bad striker either, he's very effective and if you think he's going to get "jabbed" to death you're crazy. He survived fine and took no damage against Daley (finished Kampmann in the first round), had no problem with Henderson after the first giant hendo-hop, had no problem against Lawler (KO'd Manhoef ffs), etc.
GSP has a big reach advantage but I'll bet 650,000 credits that this isn't going to resemble GSP vs. Kos at all.

GSP will make it even worse, cause Jake isn't even a small threat who has zero Knock Out Power. Kos was scary on the feet, he proved it in his previous bouts. Jake is just a top Level grappler who might even land one takedown.. but that should be it. GSP is just way to fast and athletic for a guy like Jake. Even Kos had a hell of a time to get at least one Takedown.
Also Chael thats true, has some nice Boxing. But GSP would make him look bad either way.

GSP is going to school in the stand up department, and my guess is he's got a good chance at actually stopping Jake.

jake could bring jesus in and it wouldn't matter. i'm not excited about this fight at all. even if jake does miraculously get the upset win, it will be the most boring win of all time. i'm actually glad jake has some solid wrestling skills, though, b/c hopefully that will make gsp tko him.
