In my opinion, anybody who can beat Jon Fitch, deserves a shot, regardless of any other factors. I will be shocked if BJ pulls it off. Be honest, if BJ beats Fitch, wont you be curious?

If he FINISHES Fitch that would be a great START to a title run. I love BJ but, he would have to finish 2 or 3 guys that have gone the distance with GSP to spark my interest in a 3rd fight.

Penn is a DUDE.
Definitely be one of my top picks to chill with, out of UFC fighters.
Nice interview as always

My feelings exactly. Beating Fitch is an obvious big step to a title shot, even with an 0-2 record against GSP. After all, who the hell else do you give a shot to if Penn beats Fitch?
But even if he beats Fitch, that doesnt mean he beats GSP, or even comes close. If he walks through Fitch, I'll start to consider it, but I don't see that happening either. Fitch knows how to deal with guys who can outstrike him, he has dusted off Alves twice with ease. And with his size advantage, I just have a really hard time imagining BJ winning.

I think bj is gonna be one of those fighters who improve with age. Hes always had the technical and physical tools but lacked the mental game. I think hes starting to mature as a person and is gonna have a good run in the next few years then retire.

Thank about what you are saying dudes. Fitch is THE undisputed WW in the world right now. If Penn beats him, who would he fight next if not for the title? The simple fact is that Dana has played his cards matching Penn up with Fitch. He knows the only way forward after beating Fitch is a shot. If he actually stops Fitch, there will be no arguments from me... no matter how I feel about the fight personally.

I think a KO over Hughes in round 1 and a finish on Fitch who has never been finished in the UFC and lost to 1 man would be more than enough for a title shot.
It shouldn't be about what people want to see and whats makes money , it should be about whos the most deserving if you beat Jon fitch you do and if you finish him god dam.
Say what you will but Jon fitch is one of the best fighters ever to be in the UFC and one of the best of all time and thats a fact people need to deal with.
to me Fitch vs Penn is a fight of legends and if you beat Fitch fighting anyone else other than GSP/SHIELDS is a step down a title shot needs to happen after this match.

Good interview from a fighter I don't really care for... Penn's inconsistency is arguably the only thing separating him from accolades similar to those of GSP. GSP has two losses in his career; a fight in which he respected his opponent too much and a fight where he respected his opponent too little. Since then GSP has hired professional help and used those experiences to become one of the most dominant champions in MMA. Penn’s passions have never been at lightweight but he was sent there after GSP ran him out of the division. Now Edgar has run him out of the lightweight division.
Penn has hit the ‘Couture’ point of his career where he isn’t a contender but due to his marketability isn’t given non-contender fights. I see guys like Fitch and Kos who get their asses handed to them by the champ in their division and their solution is to work their way back to the top. Penn jumps divisions looking for an easier path to the belt.
For one, I don’t think he’s going to find Fitch as any easy path to the belt and two, Edgar is a badass but he’s still an easier fight than GSP.
Penn with consistency is a badass, but without it he’s just a coin toss.

No matter what happens at 129, GSP won't be the champion afterwards. He will either win, vacate the belt and move to MW or he will lose and Shields will be the champion.

While i agree that BJ would deserve a shot at the title with a win over Fitch - that would only work out for him, if the belt didn't belong to GSP.
Because i can't see how BJ would beat GSP. Even if he somehow knocks Fitch out, that doesn't convince me.
I believe GSP is too far ahead of BJ atm.
And all the scenarios regarding GSP are a big mistery also.
There are a lot of "IF" and "WHEN" regarfing GSP.
I made a thread about that: (it's awesome btw )
Awesome thread
I believe GSP-BJ would sell, but it depends on how BJ deals with Fitch.
Personally i think Fitch will take this by UD, unless he makes a stupid mistake and wants to make it a stand up fight.
My conclusion: give GSP any WW fighter atm, because i think he will beat everyone.
But i also believe what GSP is saying right now: that Shields is a big challenge for him.
