EXCLUSIVE: Jake Ellenberger On Penn vs. Fitch And The State Of The WW Div.

“Obviously BJ is one of my favorite fighters of all time. I think Fitch is a guy that will give anybody trouble. It’s definitely an interesting match-up. I can see BJ out striking him easily, he is a much better striker, but you know, it’s going to be a good fight. It can go either way I think.

Jon is obviously gonna try to grind him and get him tired and win position like he always does and there’s really no secrets with him. I can also see BJ catching him too and I’m obviously rooting for BJ it’s going to be a fun fight to watch.”

When asked if BJ could compete with the size difference…

“Absolutely I do, he might give up a little bit of size in the welterweight class but I mean honestly his gifts are no secret. He is phenomenal, he is phenomenal everywhere, really I think that if he comes in in great shape he can beat anyone in the world easily.

Rolling around with him and seeing how good he is, is amazing he is just phenomenal. All around he is a great guy.”

When asked if BJ is deserving of a number 1 contender fight so soon…

“I think that’s pretty fair. With BJ being a multiple time world champ, I think he definitely deserves a title shot if he beats Fitch. And Fitch has been a long time top 3 guy too so I think it’s a fair number 1 contender fight."

When asked who the winner should face should GSP vacate and move up to face Anderson Silva…

“That’s a good question, obviously BJ and Jon would be a good title fight right there (for the title). They are both right there in the mix. There are still guys that are dangerous like Thiago and Koscheck. Them fighting next weekend could easily be a title fight I could see either one of them become Champ if GSP moves up.”

When asked if the belt loses value if GSP vacates and moves up…

“A little bit, I think there would be a lot of criticizing people saying that you didn’t beat GSP. But GSP is on a different level he has proved that time and time again so to be considered the number 1 guy in the world you definitely have to beat GSP and not a lot of guys can’t do that so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. “

Jake Ellenberger is not only a welterweight contender, but he and his brother have also logged several hours of mat time with UFC 127 main event participant BJ Penn. It is because of this that when BJPENN.COM’s Pedro Carrasco got him on the phone he questioned him on the match-up and the implications the UFC 127 main event has for the division he shares with his training partner.

While many critics and skeptics question the size difference that Penn has to overcome while competing in the 17 class, Ellenberger gives a different take stating that BJ’s skill set closes that gap pretty easily.

He's pretty spot on about what will happen if GSP moves to MW without losing, the next champions won't ever get the respect george does.

Yeah, I've heard others try and downplay it, but he is absolutely right. There is no point in pretending there won't be an asterisk next to the name of the next WW champion if GSP moves up.

This is exactly why GSP needs to just stay at 170.

To protect the legacy of the next WW Champ? GSP needs to move up in his own interest and for his own legacy, but IMO should not do it unless Anderson Silva moves up.

I think it's ignorant to downplay a fighter who obtains the belt without fighting the current/ex Champ. A fighter is No.1 Contender, GSP moves up, what can he do about it? Nothing, it's nothing to do with him and GSP has moved for his own reasons, no one else's.

If the title becomes vacant and you defeat the next highest contender, you are the Champ fair and square, GSP is irrelevant he's not in your division anymore.
