first off, the ufc didn't "get" couture. he wanted to come back, and when someone of his status wants to come out of retirement, you let him. even if dana didnt want a tim vs. randy fight, what choice did he have...a gonzaga vs. tim fight? that wouldn't sell.
second, randy inked a four fight deal. so there goes your one fight and hang up the gloves theory. maybe if he gets beat badly i could see him hanging em up, but a contract is a contract.
third, having randy "come out of retirement for this one fight, beat Tim" and then starting a tournament for the title just sounds a little off. why? because randy is the underdog. if you want someone to beat tim, you'd put him against someone who has a better chance to win: mirko.
no one in the ufc is protecting tim. they signed cro cop for christ's sake. having a 43 year old come out of retirement to beat the current champ would further prove the ufc has less talent than pride, so why would they want this? randy came out of retirement himself, the ufc didnt beg for him to come back.
pride definitely has better fighters than the ufc right now, everyone knows it. so no need to make this a big conspiracy to protect their past claims of having the best fighters.
