Jon Jones Quotes: Confidence or Arrogance?

Quote:

"I truly believe it's my time, so I feel as if it's already done. And the people who picked me to win, they'll be saying 'I told you so'."

"Despite being a white belt, I think I can tap out Shogun."

"I know I知 gonna win this fight because how badly I want it. This fight will be mine. I知 excited to be pushed for the first time, if I知 pushed, who knows. I知 embracing the whole situation."

"I envision just being too big, too fast, too new school. I think I'm going to be a major breath of fresh air that he just can't handle."

"Now it痴 just my time to go out there and literally take what belongs to me. I feel as though that痴 my belt and I want it and I知 going to hang on to it. But I知 going to start with Shogun."

"I'm going to be too strong, too hungry, too dynamic, too explosive; it's about the rise of Jon Jones."

"Shogun wakes up in the morning and puts his pants on just like I do. I'm sure he poops just like I poop and it's just another fight. I try not to fight the face, I try not to fight the name, I fight the body."

"It's funny I've been doing some autograph signings, I've been signing lately 'Jon Jones Champion 2011', almost as if I've spoken into existence. I just think it's crazy."

I have mixed feelings about Jones, before this MASSIVE hype train I was a HUGE fan, maybe one reason I am not is because I believe Shogun is the greatest fighter I have ever had the chance to watch :)

That second quote really made me angry.

ii should rep you for admitting that shogun is the best but to answer your question jones has confarrogance

Life B Ez 03-17-2011 02:50 AM

The guy seemed really fake to me when he was playing the "aw shucks" attitude when he first came out. I was waiting for him to start opening up a little and his ego started inflating more and he's starting to show it a little more imo at least.

I've said it before, he reminds me of when famous people come out on a talk show and everyone cheers and they say "oh no please stop just stop" all while jokingly waving them to do more. But it seems to me Jones isn't joking.

The way I see this, if it were the other way around, people would hate on that guy. I don't understand why people think it's okay from Jones. If someone else said some of the things he's said they'd be torn apart, see Anderson Silva who was loved, started to show his ego and now people don't like him.

Jones is NOT a humble guy and there is nothing wrong with being arrogant, you're an undefeated professional cage fighter, I for example love Anderson Silva. But don't act like you're this really respectful humble guy and then say things like this. That's the main reason I'm not and never will be a Jones fan. If he had come out and when "yeah I'm the greatest there ever will be" I'd have said okay prove it and then if he had proceeded to do what he's doing I'd be on his war wagon. But he didn't, he said oh I'm just trying to get better every day I
m so new I just need to learn, then he beats a few guys gets people behind him and he's signing shit "Jon Jones champion 2011" I'm sorry but that's an arrogant person.

GSP is confident, Shogun is, Cain is as well as plenty of other guys, but they don't do this. GSP is a perfect example he talks about all his opponents and he has more reason than Jones to really be arrogant he's one of the top 3 P4P fights in the world and he never says anything close to this. You can be confident and still be humble.

There is nothing wrong with being arrogant and thinking you can do anything, I would argue a fighters mindset has to be that they are the greatest ever or they shouldn't be doing it. And there is nothing wrong with trash talk from a great fighter, see Ali. The difference though is he never claimed to be humble and just learning, he showed up and said "when I'm through here, I'll be the greatest ever." It's the flip flop that I don't like from Jones. He's saying all this now, if he gets dropped in 30 seconds, I know after the fight he'll say something along the lines of "Well it happens, I just need to get back in the gym and train and learn some more and work." Sure exactly, but now you're back to "ah shucks" Tim Tebow like personality. Be one or the other, don't be a arrogant prick then get your ass kicked and say oh well I'm just new and I'm young.

I'm sure I'll get flamed by someone for saying all this, but that's how I see it, either be arrogant and talk trash and think you're the greatest to walk the earth and stand by that or be humble and down to earth. Don't be like that when people support you and your hype train(for lack of a better word, I think he has skills) but then act like you're not arrogant and try to be humble. Unless you're suffering from psychosis, which is something CagePotato might suggest Jones is suffering from.

And sorry for the length, credit to anyone who actually reads it all.

I'd say it's confidence. Not Arrogance.

O deary me. limbas gonna charge in here and do the following: List a bunch of Bones quotes, out of context, that have him saying really nice stuff about other fighters.

Reading the list in the OP, all back-to-back like that, really does make his sound a bit of a twat. But, the boy has had, like, 100 hours of interviews. Gives me 100 hours of anybody, and I can collect 10 quotes that make them sound like a complete douche.

For the record... I think bones is cocky and nasty. Not really because of anything he says... rather, the way he fights. I knew after the first few fights the dude was nasty. I knew as he moved up the ladder, this humble veneer would drip away. The words he says mean nothing. The way he fights means everything. The dude is eeeeeevil*

* in a way that is mighty productive if you intend a career in MMA.

Confidence and arrogance, a fine line between them and much of the time it will depend on how much you like a person as to whether you see them as confident or arrogant.

One thing I will say is, if Jones is arrogant is arrogance is not misplaced.

If he loses to Shogun however, it will be interesting to see how he reacts to being bettered in a fight (I know he lost one but by all accounts the fight should already have been stopped in his favour)

Rauno 03-17-2011 06:15 AM

Confidence right there. :)

Toroian 03-17-2011 06:22 AM

sounds like a ass to me cant wait for shogun to KO this kid!

marcthegame 03-17-2011 06:28 AM

Its debatable, I say Arrogance from a outside propective. However if you put you self in Jones's shoes do u believe u can beat shogun? ko him? Tap him out? Win the belt? all the answer is yes. No fighter even enters a fighting looking to lose they believe they can do whatever they want to the other guy.

LOL...not really. (bolded part). The subject of "arrogance" has been discussed too much and i think everyone agreed we can't agree,..

On the subject: i believe it's mega confidence, or somekind of confidence that has grown exponentially over the last time.
And you can also detect a drop of "involuntary arrogance" in there. Something like a drop of blood in the water that a shark can smell from 10 miles...:)

And you can't blame him. WIth the succes he had recently and everyone behind him (especially the UFC), what can you do?!

I created a *beautiful piece of writing* right here ---->

Something about Jones - obective (if you can believe it).....

and i believe that has a major part in people perceiving Jones like they do right now.
When you are constantly on every TV show, every Radio Show, on 100 feet long billboards in NY, every second article on MMA related sites is about you, every MMA forum has people mentioning your name over an over again - everything you say or do is being disected and rearranged in infinite ways.

I would love for this Media Assault on Jones to cool off actually.

What Life B Ez said it's ok in a way, although he admitted

Arrogance can be a good thing also. It can fuel great rivalries and make competition better. It's what gets one fighter going in wanting to become a great.
MMA is a sport full of arrogant people, it's just that we don't get to see fighters showing it.
How would you feel walking into a room, knowing you can beat up everyone in that room?! Walking on the street or into a bar and not knowing what fear looks like?! Everyone being "involuntary cautious" and affraid towards/of you...
Fighters need to have somekind of arrogance.

I would also like to see more people here talking about the fight itself - technical breakdown, strategies, the "who, why and how" regarding this fight.

Sometimes i get the impression there is too much "sissy talk"...especially when it involves things that were said/that happened outside of the cage.
It feels like MMAF stands for "Mega Morality Awareness Forum"...or something like this.......
