Jon Jones Talks UFC 128 Strategy, Beating Shogun Rua in the Clinch

Jon Jones is continuing to make the media rounds and get treated as the Next Big Thing in the UFC -- even though it remains to be seen whether he's the UFC's next light heavyweight champion. The latest media event for Jones was a Thursday morning interview on SportsCenter, where he offered a surprisingly detailed account of his strategy for his UFC 128 bout with Shogun Rua.

Speaking with ESPN's Josh Elliott, Jones said he believes he's significantly better than Rua in the clinch, to the point where he thinks that when the two of them come together standing up, Rua won't be able to deal with him.

"I was a Greco-Roman All-American, and the clinch is such a huge part of combat sport," Jones said. "If you look at muay Thai matches, if you look at your traditional boxing, the clinch is huge. It's a natural instinct for people to clinch when they're in a bad situation. And that's one of my main strengths. My takedowns from the clinch are very powerful, my knees from the clinch are very powerful, and I think that can be a huge mismatch that I can exploit in this fight."

Jones' views on his advantages in the clinch tend to defy the conventional wisdom, which is that Rua's muay Thai background actually gives him some advantages over Jones in the clinch -- and that Jones' superior reach is what really helps him against Rua standing up. Jones addressed the reach issue as well.

"Shogun's really good with his head movement," Jones said. "I can see Shogun trying to slip punches side to side, maybe come over with a big overhand right, maybe slip in and come up with an uppercut or a left hook. But we're ready for that, not only using the reach but using my footwork to maintain the distance. I think that will be a big factor in this fight."

Ultimately, Jones said, he thinks he has the right game plan to have his hand raised on Saturday night.

"My biggest goal is to be UFC light heavyweight champion," Jones said. "That's right in front of my face."
More ammo for the Anti-Boners.

I think we can simply call that group, The Boners. Limba can chair.

I think the clinch is about the only area where Bones might be equal to Shogun. In my opinion it's not a good strategy to try to win a fight with a muay thai striker in the clinch, but I guess it's his best shot by far.

You're saying Shogun has better wrestling to ^? I don't know if I can go with that one. We'll see come Saturday night, I feel Shogun has to KO/TKO Bones early to get the win.

Call me *Boner*!

About the strategy: nothing new here - greco-roman wrestlers love the clinch. They use it for their throws.
Taking Shogun down is the right plan for Jones.

I really do think that Jones height and ability to takedown from the clinch is the reason why jones wants to be there. It makes perfect sense. He is taller than shogun so no need to be overly concerned about knees to the head and shoguns will be very worried about the takedown and may leave himself open to some strikes in the clinch. Watch for an elbow from Jones in the clinch. He will wait for Shogun to defend the takedown from the clinch and Jones will pepper with somes knees as a decoy before throwing a big elbow. Might not end that way but I thnk thats a big opening he will have.

This is not as absurd as it sounds. Who has ever outworked Couture in the clinch? A high level Greco Roman clinch > MT clinch. You throw those knees against a greco guy, you're on your back before you can load up the second one, they're masters of misdirection in the clinch.

The MT clinch is devastating against traditional boxers and grapplers, especially when you have a height advantage, but not so against a greco guy. Especially one that has a height advantage on you.

I wish Jones would stop talking himself up though, makes me nervous.

well this is what i expected from him, hes not going to strike with him, and he doesnt have the traditional wrestling style of shooting for doubles or singles, as much as he talks about wanting to strike with shogun, i think hes going to rush in, clinch up and ragdoll him down and try to land already in side control...that would be his best option no doubt

shogun has an awesome clinch but JBJ is too tall and his greco and strength will be too much for him IMO

though if JBJ is stupid and tries to test his striking against him i think shogun will KO him, you can tell that JBJ really needs to work on his striking a lot still...he still doesnt really know how to set things up, his kicks are getting better but his punches are just awful

also...on the gound he really stretches his arm out a lot, he should becareful with that against shogun, ppl think shogun wont sub him because he only has one win by sub

BUT the guys he goes to the ground with know what they are doing usually, they are a higher level than white belt, JBJ makes some rookies mistakes on the ground, maybe its because he knows the other fighters isnt a black belt, but shogun does in fact have good BJJ and if he sees that huge ass arm just hanging out there i doubt he wont catch it

this is such an interesting fight, especially because JBJ is always getting better and better, once he learns how to set up his strikes and really learns how to use that reach...dudes gonna be scary! and hes so agile for his size, those kicks and flying knees are impressive

i hope he becomes a fighter like pettis who just trys new shit out once in a while

This could be a good formula for Jones, providing that if he get's a decent clinch, he uses it to get a takedown ASAP, not try for strikes because he will get countered. Either way, I'm 99% sure he will eat shots on the way in, and 100% sure that Shogun has big tricks up his sleeve for a ground situation.

I don't like Jon's talk of standing with Rua, because I think he actually means it... Shogun will land strikes no matter what distance Jon tries to maintain, there is no striking/stand up situation in this fight where Jones has any kind of advantage, he's not good enough to know how to use his length so it is irrelevant. He needs to get it down, stay calm and try to work for good positions.

I think Jones more dictates where the fight goes, but Rua much more dictates how the fight ends.
