at first i was thinking man gsp is gonna destroy shields easy, but now im thinking shields will have a chance to get his middleweight cardio back for this fight, the selling point for gsp is sprawl and brawl and shields wont be able to take down the best wrestler apparently in the ww div. but shields has this for his resume.

Victories

Carlos Condit

great wrestler and a prominent contender in the ufc and a student of greg jackson

Yushin Okami

Another great wrestler who is a huge middleweight and is number contender to anderson silva this year.

Mike Pyle

beat him pretty quickly and easily and pyle has very good takedown defense.

Paul Daley

hit shields with a lot of big shots and we know daley has one punch KO power showing a testament to his chin and then submission.

Robbie Lawler

hard hitter but easily made light work with him on the ground

Jason Miller

Controlled him on the ground and somehow avoided getting subbed with a locked in rear naked choke

Martin Kampmann

good grappler that lite jake up on the feet and again exposed shields good chin despite a bad striking game but transitioned very well easily getting past martins guard despite being gassed for rounds 2 and 3

Dan Henderson

No doubting the most impressive of all his wins survived an onslaught of huge punches by henderson who has one punch KO power at middleweight and at light-heavyweight and an olympic caliber wrestler showing again a great chin and dominating him on the ground mounting him repeatedly.

this is enough evidence i need to know shields stands a great chance at being crowned the new champion and i dont see gsp being the first one to stop him and i cant see him gaining a decision over a man with this kind of grappling and skill with his american jiu jitsu style.

spot on mate, his grappling is fantastic at 170 and 185 and that chin of his is made of granite for sure. gsp being subbed is not impossible because hughes subbed gsp with an armbar a few years back and though gsp has improved a lot shields is still 100x the bjj artist as hughes ever was.

Shields has good wrestling and good jitz, the problem is GSP is going to give him the Kos treatment. He won't go to the ground or engage with him in a grappling match. The difference is Shields' striking is miles behind Kos.

I'm going GSP by one sided UD or possibly a late stoppage if Shields looks like he did against Kampmann and gasses in two rounds.

If he changes his name to Matt Shields I'll give him better than even odds of winning the fight. Otherwise, he's toast. No one not named Matt has ever beaten GSP, the stats don't lie.

Seriously? Unless GSP has a massive brain fart or something he's going to easily win the fight. Too fast, too technical, too athletic.

Carlos Condit isn't a great wrestler mate, thats his biggest weakness. A strong breeze would knock Carlos to the floor, he makes up for it with his slick ground game though.

you can't write ether fighter off, everyone is looking past Shields and talking about Silva been GSP's super fight when really his super fight is right here, I give GSP a 60/40 edge but is Shields wins it wont be the big surprise to me that some seem to think it would be.

Edit:

just looking at you list
Jason Miller

No big misery there, Shields was saved by the bell, that chock was locked and loaded, another 3 seconds in that round and Shields would have been sweet dreams.

he must be on some sort of record to win 15 straight, and i dont think gsp is a better wrestler than dan henderson so i do shields getting it down at least a few times, im going to say shields wins 2 rounds to 3 in a decision win.

shields got henderson down and mounted him repeatedly, and kosheck has gotten gsp down in both matches, and jake shields bjj is above georges, i dont think gsp is finishing shields standing either if daley and henderson couldnt

He's GSP's biggest threat in the WW division to date yes, and not in the usual "Danaaaardy is thee toughest fight of my caareeer" kinda way.

A lot of people are overlooking Shields, but the fact remains that this guy has beaten the who's who of the WW world outside the UFC for close to a decade now. Guys that no one gave him a chance against. Like GSP, his MMA wrestling is far above those of other wrestlers with much better pedigrees, and his amazing submission game is a rare combination for someone with such good wrestling. Usually, top wrestlers just prefer to grind it out.

That being said I still think GSP takes this ... IMO the wrestling will cancel each other out, or at best Shields takes a round or two by LnP.

The problem is that Shields has a GLARING hole in his game in the form of his terrible standup, something GSP doesn't. With their wrestling being close to the same level, GSP will probably just do to Shields what he did to Koscheck and Fitch. Still, I'll be sweating bullets if Shields manages to get top position on GSP.

the only way I see GSP losing is that if his mind is not 100% into it due to all the "superfight drama", but with Jones being a potential better matchup to Silva (in fan's eyes at least), it might take some weight off GSP's shoulders.

From what I've seen in Shields, I don't see him as dominant as GSP. and GSP clearly wasn't 100% against KOS, he just walked through the 5 rounds, humiliating KOS, making him pay, but he was fairly fresh at the end.

We have yet to see (again) GSP going all out against someone.
