The UFC and its characters

I feel sad. It was difficult watching Rua get stuffed like that. Theres something really characterful about the Pride guys. Rua. Wandy. Rampage. CroCop. Fedor. Anderson. The list goes on. They all seem really interesting. Like comic book characters. Good and bad.

Who is going to replace these guys in the UFC?

Bones is quite some character. Love or hate him, he creates a buzz. Gets people talking... trying to guess his every thought. Sonnen is also great. I also love the Machida thing. You couldnt write it. Kung-fu Jedi father. Half Brazilian, half Japanese. Drinking piss in the morning, followed by kicking trees 500 times in the jungle. Beautiful.

Ahhhh... I'm feeling better already! :)

So, help me out. Make me feel even better. Lets talk the younger up and comers who match their skills with character. I love me some Dan Hardy, but unfortunately, his fighting skills don't quite match up to his comedy!

Phil Davis, he is a funny dude very likeable he is the rampage. Jones will be the silva. However the rest are irreplaceable. I think all pride guys are irreplaceable but the sport will grow and get better. Like there are some great characters now...lesnar,machida,gsp, cain. However the pride era still has life as shogun is 29 and then u have the man who is probably creating more hype than bones. Overeem he is like a jacked up space jam character.

This thread = a breath of fresh air (you know why...) :)

Apart from the characters you described i was thinking of others also:

Brock - always a character. Think of him as *The Ogre* - big-powerful-muscular-strange dude, who sometimes gets mad and drools all over the camera. Staying true to his ogre origins, he likes to stay as far as possible from human contact, *secreted* from civilisation, doing *ogre stuff* with his *donkey friends*, who aren't allowed to punch him in training.

Guida - *The resurrected Caveman*. All over the place, tons of energy, because - of course - he eats raw meat, just like any other caveman. And just like any other caveman he slowly learned what's going around him, but only after professor Jackson started working with him to try and integrate him in this world.

Pettis - or Neo...this Matrix look-a-like character who was raised by Ninja's when he was a child, but after suffering from amnesia, he forgot about his origins. Just like in every to-close-to-call-hollywood-ish experience, he found himself in a tight spot: do-or-die experience. And right then, he rememberd of what he was taught by his Ninja family and walked on the wall to Ninja-kick Pettis, the guy who on weekends, likes to sing Gospel music - another character right there.

Randy - who, as a young man, decided to offer his body, to a bunch of mad scientists, who were experementing with some crazy substances, in order to create the perfect soldier - and thus, Captain America was borned.

Palhares - *The Fetishist* - a lunatic, who was once encarcerated in a special facility for people who suffer from some kind of fetishism. The treatment was going fine and doctors thought they were gonna fix him.
But he escaped and took the identity of a MMA fighter. From time to time he likes to fight.
Because, in that moment, he can enjoy his fetish: trying to tear off legs, of course.

And...this guy:

Ok...neeeeeeext?!..........:thumb02:

how is gsp a character? hes more like an empty vessel (thats only concerned with protecting his brand)if anything..Same with cain, outside of his "brown pride" schtick there is nothing about him that stands out or is memorable..

in the "character" side of things, I kinda like Diego "I'm not alone in my brain" Sanchez.

People like Franklin/Griffin who are genuine nice guys

Matt Hammil for some reason (I really like the guy)

and I'm surprised no one mentionned, even tho he's not a fighter, Dana White. The UFC wouldn't be the same without him running his mouth all over the place.

A great Monday morning thread. I feel better already. I love all of the "characters" listed but, I think my favorite is going to be Guida.

Not because he's a caveman. Because he's a carpenter and a fisherman. Unknown to most, both of these trades require a high level of fighting ability to be successful.

Carpenters who can't fight become painters or plumbers.

Commercial fishermen who can't fight become bait.

^^^ Rich Franklin! Very good call. One minute, teacher buddy dude... the next, one armed warrior.

Awww man, I forgot Pat Barry and Matt Mitrione.

What an idiot I am. the UFC is drenched in characters!! I was clearly depressed from the Rua squashing.

I like Cain as well. Hes got that whole, "I dont talk shit" thing going on coupled with lashings of humble. A bit Fedor like. Plus THE tattoo which always gets somebody's knickers in a twist.

Out of the Champs, Silva is definitely the most interesting character. The dude is a bit mad for sure.

Ok... stupid thread. The UFC rocks! :thumb02:

I think it is funny that I get caught up in these same thoughts and usually it is the 'UFC IS TRYING TO BE WWE' threads that snap me out of it  There are plenty of characters, some define themselves, others we define for them. My favorite is Fitch, born with next to no athletic talent he has to spend more time in the gym and on the mats to get to the level he reached. Like our own Kick-ass or poor Batman.
