Pretty solid episode, nice way to start familiarizing people with Jake Shields and the fight coming up. The UFC is hyping the shit outta this fight because there are a lot of big names on the card and it's going to be a record-setting attendance in Toronto but honestly im not buying any of the hype...All three co-main events (or whatever you want to call them) will be landslide victories for the favorite IMHO.

Anyone notice them hyping up the SF champs by showing them finish their opponents.

Nice to see GSP's camp giving Jake the respect he deserves. I'll be going with GSP on this one, but Jake will be a mountain to climb, and people not already in-the-know are going to have a very different view of the man following the fight. So much so that if GSP can somehow make it look easy, as he often seems to do, you really have to wonder who can challenge him at WW. Because if Shields can't test him, no one can.

Watching the first episode reminded me of why I'd wanted this fight since Rumble on the Rock. Shields and GSP are the business at WW right now.

GSP says that before every fight ("my most dangerous opponent" or something to that effect). It is part of his mental preparation so that he doesn't make the same mistake he made with Serra.

In this case it is actually somewhat true at least in that all of his last opponents except BJ did literally nothing better than GSP and BJ was outsized by at least 10-15 lbs. Shields can at least say with a straight face that he does something better than GSP. I don't think it will be nearly enough to win but it is more than Fitch/Kos/Hardy/Alves could say.

Yes he always says exactly what you just said he says, but to my knowledge, this is the first time he's ever said what I quoted him saying. I think the nuance was clear and meaningful in this case.

yh i no they are both afraid of each others specialtys but i think shields is probably more worried seemingly how they start standing up so in order for jake to get his bjj working he will have to avoid the striking as much as he can
