I dunno why but I'm not opposed to freakshow fights like so many people are. It doesn't hurt the legitimacy of the sport anymore than powderpuff games hurt the legitimacy of football.
2 wins, Dan is 98-16-7, really he and Sakuraba are the only viable options in my eyes. I'm a little pissed off that people treat Severn like he's some sort of joke. Dan is proving that MMA is safe by competing for 15 plus years at his age without suffering major injuries.

Seems a bit disrespectful to fighters winning to bring him in now.

Give him Dan Hardy!

I admit, that was rude and way out of line from myself

So it's more respectful to bring in a legend have him get his ass kicked and what elevate the fighter? If they win they run the risk of looking like a tool alla Brendan Schaub. If they lose they'll be Pat Barry. Dan's on a nine fight win streak, might be eleven come Rio...HW's get contracts based on that.

Was Randy Couture running through James Toney that much fun for everyone?

is this a joke?

First of all Royce walks around about 170-180 pounds and fights like a small MW....by 1998 standards. By todays standards, Fitch, Ellenberger, or BJ would probably crush Royce with no real problem w/ size advantage

Dan Severn is a mid sized husky HW....who walks around between 240-250.

How is this fight possible???

Still have very little interest in this fight, although I wouldn't blame anyone for having an interest.
In 2003 the NHL had a handful of retired players play in a heritage clasic game in Edmonton. They had the active team for the Canadians vs the active team for the Oilers as well as having a bunch of retired members of former championship teams play a game. I don't see how this is any different. To me by saying there is something wrong with this than you are absolutely pigeon holing the sport as the blood thirsty cockfight MMA opposition has long wanted it to be. Its a sport and sports can be played outside of championship games or even championship ambitions. The old past there prime athletes in other sports are allowed to continue to play for the love of the game but somehow we as fans refuse to allow mma fighters the same privileges.

Exactly. And I think it adds legitimacy if anything. Shows that MMA has evolved, that MMA is a sport that has a present and future but that it also has a past, it's not the new kid on the block any more.

I agree and its not like its not evenly matched or that either guy is a monster who is gonna cause serious damage. Its a relatively harmless competition between two of the original stars of the sport.

Yeah. A "freakshow" fight people could get upset about is Carwin vs Royce or something equivalent. Nothing that the commissioning bodies would sanction is going to hurt MMA's legitimacy.

It would become pretty clear to casual fans what was going on after watching the first commercial or hearing the introductions for the fighters...
