UFCThe Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a U.S.-based mixed martial arts organization, recognized as the largest MMA promotion in the world. The UFC is headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada and is owned and operated by Zuffa, LLC. This promotion is responsible for solidifying the sport's postion in the history-books.
UFC is currently undergoing a remarkable surge in popularity, along with greater mainstream media coverage. UFC programming can now be seen on FOX, FX, and FUEL TV in the United States, as well as in 35 other countries worldwide.
So it's more respectful to bring in a legend have him get his ass kicked and what elevate the fighter? If they win they run the risk of looking like a tool alla Brendan Schaub. If they lose they'll be Pat Barry. Dan's on a nine fight win streak, might be eleven come Rio...HW's get contracts based on that.
Was Randy Couture running through James Toney that much fun for everyone?
You really think Royce Gracie has a place in the UFC? When you start bringing people in/back based on a name, you lose credibility for the sport. Royce was a legend, in 95'. He hasn't done anything to warrant a spot in the UFC, today.
Dan would either have to cut to under 205 and Royce would have to weigh over 186 or Royce would have to try and bulk up to over 205 and fight at HW for this fight to ever happen. Neither seems reasonably possible so this fight will never happen in the UFC, the UFC would never have an open weight fight again no matter what country its in, especially not at this stage of MMA's development.
First of all Royce walks around about 170-180 pounds and fights like a small MW....by 1998 standards. By todays standards, Fitch, Ellenberger, or BJ would probably crush Royce with no real problem w/ size advantage
Dan Severn is a mid sized husky HW....who walks around between 240-250.
How is this fight possible???
i dont think he has in years, and against Hughes, and i could be wrong, but i remember him weighing in closer to 190 then 175 (the supposed catch weight), i cant seem to find his weigh in results, but i do remember him being over and Hughes said no problem. i wanna say 186 was his weight, but that was a while ago (and a buncha vodka in me at the moment) but i dont remember him getting down to 175...
im gonna reitterate the senior games at all star events, MLB has a senior game every year too, its not like they throw a senior team against current allstars or the future allstars that also play games.... if its 2 old guys fighting eachother once and a while at big events.... fook it im all for it! course i find alot of fights entertaining in some way that alot of people here bitch about as being boring as hell (Mike Russow for one, womens mma for two), so no arguement here from me on this fight. just not Royce v Sakuraba.... they did the rematch already, Royce tested positive for PED's and was still a boring ass fight.
this is stupid, royce can be in a bjj demonstration and get an award and vid package but thats it, no card should ever waste a card spot with this freakshow, i know there a lot of brazillian fighters who are very talented just to make the card and of course their american/canadian opponents
This match with Royce is quickly turning into a nightmare for a promotion that wants to show MMA as a sport and not a freak-show attraction... UFC needs to be really careful with how they handle this entire Gracie-return deal, otherwise they'll end up shooting themselves in the foot Please Royce, just stay away
Severn is a bully and needs to pick on someone his own size.
In 2003 the NHL had a handful of retired players play in a heritage clasic game in Edmonton. They had the active team for the Canadians vs the active team for the Oilers as well as having a bunch of retired members of former championship teams play a game. I don't see how this is any different. To me by saying there is something wrong with this than you are absolutely pigeon holing the sport as the blood thirsty cockfight MMA opposition has long wanted it to be. Its a sport and sports can be played outside of championship games or even championship ambitions. The old past there prime athletes in other sports are allowed to continue to play for the love of the game but somehow we as fans refuse to allow mma fighters the same privileges.
I'm confused as to why you quoted me. I said " I wouldn't blame anyone for having an interest". Personally I don't have an interest in seeing either of these guy fight but my post wasn't an attempting to insinuate any of what you are saying.
i could acutally get behind this fight, more so than the jimmerson idea, it definetely has no buisness on the main card,if they really want him on this card just telivise his fight on the undercard on spike or something and market the hell outta that
But a true champion, face to face with his darkest hour, will do whatever it takes to rise above. A man fights, and fights, and then fights some more. Because surrender is death, and death is for pussies- kenny powers
