Well this just keeps getting weirder and weirder. Ever since Royce Gracie announced his intentions to compete at UFC Rio, we’ve been wondering exactly who the UFC could possibly find for him to fight. Since the hint of a UFC Event in Brazil hit the Online Rumor Mill, Dan Severn has been passionate about his intentions to take part in this event as being his finale match to his fans and the MMA Community. Dan has said on numerous occasions that if he had the opportunity to have such a match in Brazil, he would want it to be with Royce Gracie.

In light of Royce publically announcing his intent to take part in a UFC Event in Brazil, Dan Severn is, officially, throwing out the challenge to Royce Gracie. Wanting to take it to the cage, one last time, in an all-out ground war; Two legends of the octagon can thrill and amaze the UFC audience of yesterday and today, one last time.

Also, in a rare behind-the-scenes-look, Dan Severn is opening up his comeback trail training to his fans by allowing a production crew to chronicle the challenges, emotion and even the levity of a battle-tested Hall of Fame Champ, dusting off his boots, for one last run.

Look, I have nothing but respect for Dan Severn. The very fact that he’s 52 years old and not only still fighting, but riding a nine fight win streak, is incredible. But MMA fans do not need their own version of Jordan with the Wizards. Perhaps more importantly, MMA fans do not want to pay to watch two old, one-dimensional fighters hug fight on what will otherwise be a stacked card. Please, somebody just starch this whole “Royce fighting in Rio” thing before it gets even uglier.

This match with Royce is quickly turning into a nightmare for a promotion that wants to show MMA as a sport and not a freak-show attraction... UFC needs to be really careful with how they handle this entire Gracie-return deal, otherwise they'll end up shooting themselves in the foot Please Royce, just stay away

They better not make this some side show event. I respect what Royce has done early on but I do not want him on the card, the game has completely evolved past him. We all saw what Matt Hughes did to him.

Dan is only four fights from the 100 win mark and he's got two fights scheduled soon. I wouldn't mind this being some sideshow match for Dan's 100th win.


I dunno why but I'm not opposed to freakshow fights like so many people are. It doesn't hurt the legitimacy of the sport anymore than powderpuff games hurt the legitimacy of football.

Difference is that football is established and recognized as a legitimate sport, MMA is still in the process of getting there... Bringing in retired fighters just to sell tickets does not make you look good, period

I don't mind a throwback fight. Its not a sideshow because Royce and Dan are at the same stage Royce vs say Anderson Silva is a sideshow. This has the potential to be a competitive fight and that makes it respectable IMO.

Bringing these guys in just gives people who oppose MMA more ammo in their war to bring our sport down, and I don't like it one bit...

I realize that this would be a competitive fight, but it would not be up to the standards of the UFC and so it needs to take place elsewhere if at all

Had no idea Dan was still fighting so often!

Still have very little interest in this fight, although I wouldn't blame anyone for having an interest.

Again, I disagree. Show me a few examples where fights like this have hurt MMA? Even the absolute freakshow co-main event in Couture vs. Toney didn't hurt the legitimacy of MMA at all. Hell it seemed to have a positive effect on the casual fan.

Would be an interesting fight, i think gracie will win, but if Severn has progressed in his mma game like he did after losing to gracie the first time it should be interesting. Severn had all the tools to be great it just gracie was a superior jujitsu fights. Fast forward 16 years later, that superiority is gone.
