Vitor Belfort: "It was a lucky shot, I want a rematch"

19/04/11 - Belfort on Anderson: "It was a lucky shot, I want a rematch"

Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort’s recent fight generated a level of coverage never seen before in the Brazilian media. It captured a mainstream audience, with the event being reported on even by regular daily newspapers and TV programs. a boom for the mixed martial arts in Brazil which is still being talked about.

As if to underline that, Belfort appeared on ‘UFC Sem Limites’ this week - an MMA program broadcast on RedeTV - to explained how he was caught by surprise by the Silva front kick which knocked him out early in the round.

“The unique thing I did badly in that fight was not moving, [standing still] for too long. In the moment that I stopped, I didn’t expect that he could land with that kick. Nobody, not even himself, expected that. He was shocked by the way he landed the kick and with the result of it.

"But I was doing very well and trained very hard. All the Brazilian and American fans, people from the whole world know how much I dedicated myself for that fight. I came from injury but I didn’t feel scared to face him.

"On the contrary, I was in the fight but then that hit landed by chance. I believe what happened was just a one-off moment he had in the fight. He made the most of that and conquered the victory.

"I don’t believe in luck. The more you train the more luck you have, but certainly that was a hit that he will land once out of one thousand attempts. I would like to get the rematch to be sure. It left a bad taste because I know I was feeling very well. Everybody says I was superior in the beginning of the battle, looking for the fight, and I know he was insecure to trade with the hands.

“But Anderson is a very versatile fighter, he is very intelligent and has been coming off a sequence of wins while I came from injury. His timing inside the Octagon weighed a little. The moment I stood still, he caught me and executed me. But obviously I would like a revenge, a second chance. I think not only me but also everybody from Brazil and rest of the world wants it.”

Belfort waits for news on his return to the Octagon and doesn’t rule out the chance of performing at other weight classes if it pleases the organization and the fans.

Yeah, uhh, no.

No such thing as a "lucky shot". Anderson Silva will see this and laugh.

Isn't the unique thing that any fighter who loses does badly cause the loss?

Nobody "expected" that? Is Vitor Belfort stupid or was this translated terribly.

A 3-5 fight win streak is the way to prove he's worthy of a rematch.

I'll grant him that that kick may not or will not land very frequently. But, there is no luck involved in any perfectly executed strike that ever gets thrown. He's just sour that he blew his gifted shot and has to work his way back up.

I agree. Although that may take a couple of years, and I suspect Anderson to be retired by then.

I like Vitor and everything, but he is acting childish here. There is no shame in getting KTFO by Silva. Give him a rebound fight against Bisping or something.

I agree on the rematch, but not because of a"lucky shot". I want one because I know vitor is a better fighter than he skewed that night.

He'll NEVER make it back to a titleshot if he has to actually earn it this time lol.

I say give him Sonnen.

At first I thought.. eeeehhh, Sonnen would sit on Vitor for three rounds and destroy.

At the same time, Vitor has a huge stand up advantage.

Maybe that's not such a bad idea. Sonnen/Vitor for a contender fight?

Not much else going on in the middleweight division anyway. I'm really not looking forward to the main event at UFC Rio.

Look man, that was not a lucky shot. He sparta kicked him in the face and knocked him out clean; flawless victory. It was Anderson too, how are you gonna say Anderson got a lucky KO? That KO is going right there with Tony Frykland's reverse elbow KO, and the entire Forrest Griffin fight. What a disrespectful thing to say.

I was almost as impressed with the finals strikes when Vitor was on the ground as the front-kick. Talk about laser pin-point accuracy when most guys would have swarmed him and miss half the strikes. But I guess that's what make Anderson Anderson lol.

Vitor was so lame for letting that kick land. He tried it twice on Maia IIRC and even Maia had the sense to move out of the way a little. He just stood there slackjawed, not like Silva was firing combos and ended with that kick or anything.
