Falcao v Lawlor in the works for UFC: Rio
Quote:
A middleweight matchup between Brazilian slugger Maiquel Falcao (26-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and the always-entertaining Tom Lawlor (7-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) is in the works for UFC 134.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed that both competitors have verbally agreed for the amtchup, and bout agreements are expected to be distributed shortly.
UFC 134, originally announced as "UFC: Rio," takes place Aug. 27 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro and marks the UFC's first Brazil event since 1998.
It's currently unknown if the bout will factor into UFC 134's televised main card.
Falcao returns to action for the first time since his octagon debut, a UFC 123 win over Gerald Harris. "Big Rig" was expected to take part in this past March's UFC on Versus 3 event, but a lingering hand injury forced him to withdraw from a planned contest with Alessio Sakara.
Falcao brings a nine-fight win streak into the matchup, and all but the UFC performance ended with a first-round stoppage.
Meanwhile, "The Filthy Mauler" looks to build on the momentum of a UFC 121 decision over Patrick Cote. The much-needed result ended a two-fight skid for Lawlor, who had dropped outings with Joe Doerksen and Aaron Simpson in his previous two trips to the cage.
Prior to the setbacks, "The Ultimate Fighter 8" cast member had picked up both a "Fight of the Night" and "Submission of the Night" bonus in wins over C.B. Dollaway and Kyle Kingsbury.

Looks like a fight to build up Falcao. I hope it is a prelim fight on Spike or something.
My prediction:

Great fight, Lawlor isn't very good but he looked great against Cote and Falcao needs a fight or two before facing the big dogs (although IMO he's ready for anyone).
Lucky guy for making it on the Rio card, lots of bigger names don't seem to be so lucky.
edit: just wanted to throw this in there, Falcao says Harris tapped three times which would have made him on a 9 fight win streak ALL being first round finishes.

Depends a lot to me. Not sure if Lawlor is as good as he looked in his last fight or how much Cote's back had to do with making Lawlor look good. I think if Lawlor feels the need to win like he did against Cote he can win.

Yea I watched the fight again and he definitely tapped. Also, the horn sounds somewhere in the neighborhood of five seconds early. I don't have a specific link, but I remember a high ranking official admitting this. Too bad for Harris, because he may not have been cut if he would have lost in the first instead of refusing to engage for 2 rounds.

When I glanced at the title of this forum I instantly thought it was going to be about Robbie Lawler vs. Falcao.
disappointment ensued.

Lawlor is very underrated imo.
..........
..........
..........
But not in this case.
Falcao is too fast - too strong - too technical for him.
The only way i see Lawlor holding his own against Falcao is if he can manage to take Falaco down and grind him out.
But if Harris couldnb't take Falcao down, Lawlor sure as hell won't do it imo.
Falcao TKO 1st in the first 2 rds.

Is anyone backing Lawlor? I'm not. Just can't see past a TKO R1 victory for Falcao. It better be. I've got my hopes on Falcao being the new man. Replacing the erm.. irreplaceable, Wanderlei.
