All the Marquadt hate surprises me -- but then again, the fickleness of MMA fans does not. I think Marquadt should do fine. I could easily see him making it to the top 5. One thing that is notable, is that is his decision to move down indicative of a GSP move up? I think a lot of signs are pointing to that if GSP does win the Shields fight, we'll see him go to MW.
I don't get why he's moved to a division which is basically a shark tank of wrestlers. He's going to get eaten alive.
Agreed, he'll probably do similar to Thiago Alves - which is very well, until he meets an excellent wrestler. And his striking is not even close to Thiago's level in my opinion.
I can see Marquardt doing very well and putting a couple of decent wins together, then running into someone like Josh Koshcheck or Jon Fitch at which point his run to the top will be quickly derailed.
In fact, if the Rumble who fought Dan Hardy turns up with that state of mind to utilise his wrestling, Marquardt could easily lose this fight (though of course he should have a better TDD than Hardy).
I'm also interested to see how the cut will affect him.
There are some interesting fights for him at Welterweight, but personally i feel he would of been better staying at Middleweight. There are A LOT of things that have to go right for him in order to ever challenge for the title. GSP fecking of to middleweight being one of them.
Nate getting out-wrestled by Sonnen and Okami doesn't necessarily mean he'll automatically get out-wrestled by Kos and Fitch, especially if he handles the weight cut well and comes in the bigger, stronger fighter. The only hole I see in Nates game is his wrestling and if he continues to improve on that I see him matching up well with anyone at WW. I've been a pretty big AJ fan but I hope Nate blasts him in their upcoming fight and starts getting some top 5 opponents at WW to see what he can really do there.
I remember a thread when this video was posted and people were shocked at how comparable in size GSP and Nate were. Either GSP is a good enough size to be a large MW like people claim of Nate, or Nate is not as large a MW as people claim. If Nate diets and trains properly I don't see why he'd have a harder time making WW than GSP, Fitch or Alves.
