BJ Penn: 'Teammates Have to Fight Each Other'

Quote:
If you're a UFC fighter who's unhappy about being pressured into fighting your friends and teammates, don't come crying to B.J. Penn.

The former UFC welterweight and lightweight champion said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour that it's all part of the game, and fighters should plan accordingly.

"I think teammates have to fight each other, and I knew that the whole time," Penn said. "That's why I would always distance myself. Of course they have to. I always thought it was B.S. that [Josh] Koscheck and [Jon] Fitch wouldn't have to fight, but they can just keep taking turns going for title shots, but they never had to fight each other? That doesn't make sense."

As Penn told Ariel Helwani on Monday's show, that's part of the reason why he chooses to do his training camps in Hawaii, far away from the more established gyms on the mainland where potential future opponents train.

"You know why I never went to any of these places and trained? Because it's the same thing that you see with guys like Rashad Evans and Jon Jones. Now there's a big problem because of that. That's why I always kept my distance from anyone. I had a thousand chances to go train with Jon Fitch, but I knew I'm probably going to fight this guy one day, so let's be friends when we're done fighting."

Of course, Penn's disdain wasn't limited to the teammates who refuse to fight each other. He also had some choice words for the fighters he suspects of using performance-enhancing substances, not that he's ever been shy about calling them out in public.

"I always complained about the steroids and stuff, but really I look back on it and I can beat all these guys even if they're on steroids," Penn said. "I just like to tease them. ...I would love to see more of the guys get busted, but there's really nothing you can do about that stuff, I guess."

I'm looking forward to the day they try to tell Nick and Jake to fight.

That'll be a good one

So this is BJ's excuse for not training at a proper training camp with other elite fighters all year round, because he doesn't want to get attached. ha ha, I love it.

But seriously, he does have a point. You're training with these guys day in day out. Sharing blood, sweat, maybe even tears, you're bound to become good friends with them and not want to fight.

I've never really been able to make my mind up and judge other fighters who don't want to fight their team mates, because I don't know how I would react. I would hate to fight my friends, but if there was a world title on the line and some serious cheddar involved, then it would have to be done.

The whole Jones/Shad fiasco was/is a joke, it's all fake. They had known each other for like less than a year and Rashad claims that Jones was like a brother to him. Brendan Schaub came out and said that the two were never close in the first place and were never hanging out on the weekends together. All a load of fake drama bollocks.

Words of wisdom from Gary Goodridge-

Quote:
“It’s a sport, and teammates have to get over it. We fight for pride and we fight for honor but most of all, we are prize fighters who fight for money… Maybe the casual fan doesn’t really understand that the sport isn’t personal. There is nothing personal about fighting…it’s business.” Goodridge also had less than kind words for fighters who do not want to fight their teammates.

“To the guys who won’t fight their teammates: Stop being scared. Not wanting to fight a teammate might make you sound honorable but the reality is that one of them has got to be scared. I fought Tom Erikson and I love the man. Tom Erikson was one of my best men at my wedding… Tom Erikson and I stayed at each other’s houses and I love the guy. We’ve traveled around the world together numerous times. It has nothing to do with fighting.”

BJ left AKA originally over the fact that there was talk of Sherk who trained there at the time moving down to LW. You are calling BS but there is some legitimacy to that fact.

If BJ is still talking about fighters on steroids, I wonder to whom he is refering to? He was moaning about the same thing 4 or 5 years ago. Justifiably so. There doesn't seem to me there are that many obvious fighters that are using steroids. BJ knows more obviously. Just wondering who?

It always makes me scratch my head when I read ppls views on this situation.People get so hung up on certain words (that are obviously open to interpretation) and all common sense gets thrown out the window.Just try substituting brothers/friends/family for the word team mate it would do u the world of good..
The bottom line is rashad/jardine had reservations about jones joining the team. But later obliged due to jackson's pact.He has sinced reneged on that pact unbeknownst to rashad..Jones was a "team mate" thats right a "teammate" that means he had front row seats to rashad's strengths/weaknesses of course one would be reluctant to fight, evans obviously feels like hes was spied on..

It will also be one of the easiest wins of Jake Shields career. He is built to beat Diaz.
