Jake Shields: "My boxing wasn't up to task.."

http://espn.go.com/blog/mma/post/_/i...s-to-st-pierre

Quote:
The ground game is Jake Shields’ bread and butter -- everyone knows it. Shields had been piling up submission victory after submission victory for so long that he never felt a sense of urgency to work on his standup -- until he agreed to fight welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre on Saturday night at UFC 129 in Toronto.

In the months leading to the fight, Shields devoted a chunk of training working on his stand-up -- boxing in particular.

“I’ve been working on it a lot for a while,” Shields told ESPN.com. “The last couple of months I’ve been working with a lot of pro boxers. I wish I’d done it sooner.”

If only he had a few more months to fine-tune some things, especially his jab.

St. Pierre is years ahead of Shields in the striking department. The difference in their level of striking skills was evident immediately once they commenced to fighting.

Both fighters use left jabs regularly in the opening round, but the champ’s was more accurate, much quicker and more forceful. Shields’ jab was more of the pawing variety. This pattern would repeat itself throughout the five-rounder.

“What’s so good about the jab is that when you throw it, you take very little risk,” St. Pierre’s striking coach Firas Zahabi told ESPN.com before the fight. “You don’t shift your body weight very much, and you don’t expose yourself for very long.

“Also, it’s the punch that travels the fastest. It travels in a straight line. Therefore, it's the most important strike [in St. Pierre's arsenal]. It offers the perfect blend of attack and defense.”

St. Pierre dropped Shields with a stiff jab in the first round -- partly assisted by Shields’ poor footwork.

The fight rarely went to the ground, where Shields could have best worked his magic. When they did hit the ground, it was only because St. Pierre wanting to go there.

St. Pierre would retain his title by scores of 50-45, 48-47 and 48-47. Shields didn’t need to hear the official tally to know he wouldn’t be taking the 170-pound title with him back to California.

He also knows why: His boxing skills weren’t up to the task.

“Now that I’ve lost I’m going to work a lot more on my boxing,” Shields said. “My goal the next six months is to really learn how to box, because if someone [else] finally stops my takedowns they'll beat me.

“If I can catch my boxing up with my ground skills, hopefully before I retire I can get another shot at Georges and I’ll be able to do things a little differently.”

Its to bad Cesar Gracie can't show 1/10 the class Shields has about the loss. Jake's keeping it real, Cesar is being a whiny bitch.

Jake shouldve went for broke and just bull rushed GSP for some takedowns, and maybe he couldnve stole a victory at the end when GSP's eye was blurry. But easier said than done, I think Shields did try that, but couldnt get the timing down. He tried rushing in for takedowns while fresh and couldnt get him. GSP is just very quick. I still consider Jake Shields a top contender in WW and MW, no doubt he will be back.

Going 0-3 in this event - with all of his fighters being OUTCLASSED - can't help. LOL

Maybe it will shut him up for a while.

He was feeling too important after the last Strikeforce event.

His whole interview where he was saying he got on Renzo for training GSP for this fight when GSP is fighting out of Jacksons rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah...
I'm curious why he didn't have anything to say about Roger Gracie also training with GSP in recent times.

I think Cesar Gracie took the momentum his gym got after the last Strikefore show too seriously.

He also made far too many public appearences/interviews recently.

I say: skip the smack-talk - focus on training - let the fighting do the talking.

For a guy that has shown in the past that he has pillow hands he looked really good in the last fight standing up.

Shields was able to punish GSP in the standup even AFTER the destruction of Koscheck last fight.

Love both fighters but cant wait for Shields next fight...the guy doesnt even need to work the ground anymore since like they said the round is his bread and butter.

Shields fixes his boxing and holy cow this guy will destroy.

I agree even though I can't possibly fathom how it is to be in front of GSP. It's easy for us to say he should have bull rushed him, but really that is the ONLY way someone can beat GSP. A fighter will have to pressure him and not play his game. A fighter who challenges GSP will have to take it from him because GSP isn't going to put himself in harms way. You can't expect GSP to give you an opening to strike for a takedown. GSP hasn't finished a fighter in years, so I don't know why these grapplers try to fight him on the feet without really pushing their game. GSP has some to do with it, but they respect his standup too much.

I honestly think Jake needs to stay at 85. He just looks alot stronger against his opponents there..

Jake isn't going to catch up to GSP's striking. No possible way. I don't know why he didn't try harder to force the TD.

He showed a ton of improvement, but was still very far behind. He would have likely been KO'd if it wasn't for the poke in the eye.
