I think its just his personality, bias from being screwed over in the past, and self pride/dignity.

Roger Huerta had a similar problem when he wasn't getting paid for the PR.

Look at Mike Tyson, he was a brute, ruthless, cocky and beat his wife to top it off while making millions. Tyson is not like GSP the poster boy of MMA, and will go down in history for his fights not his demeanor outside the ring.
the way GSP presents himself to the UFC and his sponsors has got a lot to do with his income. He looks lovely. Always well spoken. Always dressed like a Don. He does so many interviews, appearances and talks. Combine that with his win streak and you get super marketability.

Mike Tyson is one of the rare examples of being so good, you dont need PR. But, lets be clear here, he is an anomaly. He was knocking out EVERYBODY with very little fuss. His fights were brutal and exciting. He was WORLD CHAMPION at 20 years old.

These are the things that make fighters marketable. Nick is exciting. His current wages reflect that. But, if he wants more, he's got to earn it.

PR is based on image regardless of substance. It's just about putting a mask on to please as many people as possible. Politicans are the best PR people. Some fighters aren't cut out for it, it's not a question of not having the smarts to figure that out, it's about not wanting to "sell out" your personality and who you are.

You have some fighters that love the spot light (Frank Mir, Jon Bones, Chael etc..) and others that don't (Nick Diaz, Brock, Fedor, Cain). By that logic people that don't get business degrees (social work, teaching etc..) are dumb because they aren't doing all that's necessary to acquire money. Doesn't mean that they don't want to make more in their given field, and an argument can be made that their contribution is justificion for a raise.

College education has nothing to do with smarts; it's about specialization. People come out of college with degrees just as clueless as when they went in, though they might be specialized in their particular field. Some of the smartest people I know are high school drop outs and some of the most idiotic are graduates (not the common but it happens).
