BJ Penn looking for fight at UFC 134 in Rio

Quote:
With the UFC's trip to Brazil only a few months away, UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami is already taking shape.

Since the announcement of the event many fighters have been trying to find a spot on the card. However, with many fights already announced, space is becoming limited. Everyone from Royce Gracie to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira have all stated their desire to participate in the UFC's second ever Brazilian show and you can now add one more name to that list.

According to FightersOnlyMagazine.co.uk BJ Penn is also throwing his name into that hat. In fact, not only is BJ wanting to fight on the card, but he's already thought about training arrangements.

"And “The Prodigy”, who has close ties and a strong history with Brazil, is also decided to try and get a fight on the UFC 134 card in Rio. He says he will go to train at the Nova Uniao facility in Rio de Janeiro for a month in advance if he gets a slot on the card."

Who do you guys think would be a good match up for BJ in Brazil? There are a lot of guys at welterweight who are unavailable due to fights or injuries.

For me the best match up would be Alves vs. Penn if Alves gets out of the Rick Story fight with little or/no injury. If that's not possible I would love to see Penn fight Jake Shields. BJJ fans around the world have always wanted to see how these guys would match up against each other on the ground - where better than in Rio?

BJ says he'll go and train back at Nova Uniao if he fights which I think would be a really good move for him. Hopefully Anderson can persuade him to go and train with them at Blackhouse too

Supporting Fighters:

Dan Hardy - Quinton Jackson - Nick Diaz - Paul Daley - Carlos Condit - Urijah Faber - Joe Lauzon - Lyoto Machida - Antonio Rogerio Nogueira - B.J. Penn - Kazushi Sakuraba - Anderson Silva - George Sotiropoulos - Mauricio Rua

Hmm, I thought he was injured. Of course I'd love to see BJ back as soon as possible (especially on a big card) and I'd love to see him get back into a major camp like Nova Uniao. Granted it's more of a BJJ camp.

Yea he pulled out of UFC 132, but 134 is August 27, almost 2 months after 132. I'm guessing he'd have time to put in a full camp.

Yeah, there hasn't really been much information about his injury since it was announced which is a bit strange. It says that he was training with Anderson and Aldo before 129, so it can't have been that bad.

I like Alves vs BJ also. BJ is porported to have the best boxing in MMA so I'd like to see how he does in the striking exchanges against a genuine Muay Thai beast. I'm alot more excited about this prospect than BJ vs Shields.

Sorry BJ. That just isn't happening. UFC Rio is already plenty stacked, especially if Minotauro v Cro Cop materializes. There aren't many viable options for him anyway (unless Alves wins and wants a short turnaround). I'd rather have him co-main a different card with Fitch or Shields.

I like the idea of Shields vs BJ. Shields is obviously going to be bigger and stronger than BJ. I could see him taking BJ down but I don't see him just laying on top. He's going to work for submissions, this will leave lots of openings for us to truly see BJ's BJJ. For the most part when we have seen guys on top of BJ they are only striking, not working towards subs. Shields will work for subs and those opportunities will provide us with a lot of entertainment I think.

On the standing side of things BJ should be able to light Shields up but in most cases won't be able to trick Shields with a takedown.

I'm for the fight but that might be too much star power on one card.
