MMA is HUGE in New York. And I mean huge.
There's got to be 25-30 gyms within a 10 mile radius from me. Probably a dozen fight teams, pro and amateur. Jon Jones' muay thai coaches teaches here in Buffalo. So does Amir Sadollah's old coach. And Rashad Evan's coaches. Castricone Kickboxing is near here, Rampage and Alves have worked with the head coach extensively.
And that's just Buffalo. Even down in the nowhere-tier (like Attica, NY where I was born, home of the prison) there's small MMA gyms, hell my friend Kyle has a gym there and is a 145lb amateur champion. A good amount of the Karate and TKD gyms (and there's oodles, we have a ton of nationally ranked TKD and Kenpo guys here) have started teaching MMA-related classes ontop of their normal curriculum.
MMA being "illegal" in NY has not stopped the epic boom of the sport here, it hasn't effected it at all honestly and if the campaigning politicians think it has, they're blind or ignorant or both.
