Jon Olav Einemo draws Dave Herman
A fire drill has further shuffled the UFC 131 deck.
UFC newcomer Jon Olav Einemo (6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has received a new opponent for his octagon debut after his original opponent, Shane Carwin, was tapped to replace the recovering Brock Lesnar in a bout against Junior Dos Santos.
Einemo now meets fellow newcomer Dave Herman (20-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC), and Herman's original opponent Joey Beltran (12-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC) will meet newcomer Aaron Rosa (16-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC).
The UFC today announced the changes. UFC 131 takes place June 11 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Einemo's status was placed in doubt yesterday when UFC president Dana White said he did not yet have an opponent for the Norwegian fighter. Einemo's trainer, Martin De Jong, was unaware of the change.
Carwin stepped up to meet Dos Santos when Lesnar revealed Thursday that he is battling a second case of diverticulitis, an intestinal disease.
Einemo was booked to face Carwin this past March in what was to be his first MMA fight in almost three years. The former Abu Dhabi submission wrestling champion's most recent appearance came in November 2008 when he submitted James Thompson. Prior to that, he was outpointed by Fabricio Werdum at PRIDE 31.
Beltran, meanwhile, is on the rocks following back-to-back losses inside the octagon. After a successful debut at UFC 109 against Rolles Gracie and follow-up win against Tim Hague, "The Mexicutioner" was outpointed by Matt Mitrione and, most recently, Pat Barry. Although he showed UFC fans just how tough he is in taking the best shots of both, the setbacks nonetheless put his back against the wall.
Rosa makes his UFC debut after stints in Strikeforce, Bellator, and most recently Titan Fighting Championships. This past March, he stole the thunder of "The Ultimate Fighter 10" cast member Abe Wagner – who was fresh off a big win over former UFC champ Tim Sylvia – with a second-round submission.
Rosa's current win streak stands at four.
It's unknown whether Einemo vs. Herman will remain on UFC 131's main card. Beltran vs. Rosa is expected for the pay-per-view event's preliminary card.
So there it is. Herman is a nice youngish prospect, so it should be a good fight. My gut says Einemo, but I wouldn't be surprised if Herman wins.
Also, Beltran may be fighting for his job against Aaron Rosa. TBH I've never heard of Rosa.
