I see your logic, but the fact remains that when you take Rashad away from the number one contender spot there really arent any fighters that you can replace him with - not with any real credibility anyway.
Rampage is the next in line for the title shot, and assuming he defeats Hamill that will mean his last 3 where a loss to Rashad, a split decision win over Machida and a win over a not even top 10 guy in Matt Hamill.
Outside of that you've Machida who was riding a 2 fight (arguably 3) loosing streak until he KO'd a past it legend.
Shogun looked like shit against Jones. No immediate rematch. Forrest beat Franklin who is utterly irrelevant in the current LHW division. Davis is raw and untested.
Basically, i can see why one may argue that Rashad has forfeited his No1 contender place by choosing to sit on the shelf for so long, but the fact that there is no other obvious contender to replace results in No1 contendership loosing credibility. The bottom line is Rashad has earned deserves the next shot.
P.S On a purely biased, selfish note i am all for Rampage getting the shot when he beats Hamill
