he didnt have good striking though

Combine those, and I might be able to see someone winning a decision.
A fighter like that would still get tooled. The wrestling isn't good enough to stop GSP's takedowns and once it goes to the ground the type of BJJ game that Maia and BJ have isn't enough to threaten GSP. Maia and BJ are no doubt top level BJJ guys, but the style they have is too slow to reliably catch GSP in a sub. As I mentioned earlier you need the Rousimar Palhares style of BJJ where sub is locked in hard as soon as the fight hits the ground, otherwise GSP will use his explosive speed to break free and get out of there. You gotta get him down and lock it in hard right away, if you have to spend a minute working for position to lock in the the sub then GSP is going to be gone.

The way to beat GSP I think is with mind games and deception. When you look at his losses agains the Matts they were because of mind games and deception.

GSP is mentally weak. He lost to Hughes because he was intimidated. Also in his fight with Jake he seemed scared after his eye got hurt. He lost to Serra because Serra came out and struck with him which GSP wasnt expecting.

I am not going to like it but someone needs to come out and talk a bunch about him then tell the world how he is go to dominate in one area ( like wrestling) then in reality be training and planning to do something else ( like stand up. If they can get a dominate fist round by deception alone the may be able to break him mentally.

The way to beat GSP is by punching him in the face real real hard.

The thing with Cain is, he doesn't have the striking to threaten GSP on the feet. GSP's defensive Boxing can only be exploided by some real techincal guys. Cain is an above average striker right now still.

Unfortunetly Nick is at the bottom of that list..

He's what you would call a dream matchup for GSP!

this actually makes sense

good defense, elusive, stay on the outside ŗ la machida
explosiveness, pinpoint striking with 1 punch KO power

the issue on the ground is that most of the time, GSP is on top if it goes there

A very technical mma boxer is needed. IE frankie edgar etc. Nick diaz will get jabbed to death 10/10. The fight wouldn't even be competitive I guarantee it. Honesty I hate gsp but I can acknowledge his skill set and until there is a machine type fighter at ww, there's no chance.

GSP controlled the fight with Shields because for some god awful reason Shields decided this would be the one fight he decided to NOT run across the cage on his knees going for a takedown (at least that's how I saw it based on everything).

GSP stood with Shields because he didn't want to grapple with the best 170 JJ fighter in the world. Which is a no brainer. GSP didn't maintain the pace of rounds 1,2, and 3 because he was cut in round 3. Had he continued to jab 'n run as he did against Koscheck, as well as in the first three rounds it would have looked much the same.

What's the way to beat GSP? Be better than him. Its that simple. If your stand up is better, he'll put you on your back and grind you (See vs Alves, Penn). If you're grappling is better, or there's a chance it might be better he'll use his, patent pending, stand up grindage(see vs Koscheck, Shields, Fitch).

Honestly, there are zero WWs who have more than the slimmest margin of chance against GSP right now. And its not because GSP is so well rounded (he is, but that has nothing to do with it). Its just that 90% of the WW division isn't.

What? Really? I'd quite confidently say he is one of the strongest mentally in all of MMA. In every possible way. He got berated constantly on Ultimate Fighter by Kos and didn't react. Nearly every fighter has tired some sort of mind game with him and not since Matt Serra has it affected him.

I'd question the fact Matt Serra specifically got under GSPs skin enough to win the fight. Yeah GSP wasn't all there that night, in 2006, 5 years ago. But It had sod all to do with Serra in my opinion.

Hes also mentally strong in a way that he intelligently alters his figh game, his skills leading up to very fight and does it methodically and in a very cerebal way. His opponents come up against him not knowing how they are about to lose. This scares his opponents.

Again....mentally strong.
