GSP controlled the fight with Shields because for some god awful reason Shields decided this would be the one fight he decided to NOT run across the cage on his knees going for a takedown (at least that's how I saw it based on everything).
GSP stood with Shields because he didn't want to grapple with the best 170 JJ fighter in the world. Which is a no brainer. GSP didn't maintain the pace of rounds 1,2, and 3 because he was cut in round 3. Had he continued to jab 'n run as he did against Koscheck, as well as in the first three rounds it would have looked much the same.
What's the way to beat GSP? Be better than him. Its that simple. If your stand up is better, he'll put you on your back and grind you (See vs Alves, Penn). If you're grappling is better, or there's a chance it might be better he'll use his, patent pending, stand up grindage(see vs Koscheck, Shields, Fitch).
Honestly, there are zero WWs who have more than the slimmest margin of chance against GSP right now. And its not because GSP is so well rounded (he is, but that has nothing to do with it). Its just that 90% of the WW division isn't.
