In short hes white and happens to be american, u can get away with a whole hell of a lot when u fall into that category. The fact that he somewhat humbled someone thats was perceived to be a bully also tipped the scales. Its like ppl want to live through him vicariously only they expose their hypocrisy by doing so because they've demonized other fighters for less
Obviously that's it. The main reason I like Sonnen is because he's white. If he was black, I'd probably hate his guts.

People say Chael did everything he said he was going to do against Anderson Silva. Really? He said he would "beat a hole in his face." He said he would "take his belt home." He said he would "put him on his back like a pornstar." Or some silly whore related rhetoric.
Of those three things. He did NOT open a single cut on Anderon Silva's face. He did NOT take his belt home. All he did was take him down and try to grind him out. It was the same Sonnen who lost to Damien Maia, who grinded out Miller and Marquardt. He brings nothing tot he table except a trash talking version of Jon Fitch (except without the black belt JJ.

I keep seeing all this love for Sonnen and how he should be able to fight. Granted the man didnt kill anyone and should be able to make a living. But why all the love for him,why do people wanna see him back in the octagon to fight Silva again. Jason Miller gets to be on TUF and its Chael this and Chael that.
Please clear this up is it strictly because of his ability to spew shit from his mouth at the speed of an Anderson Silva triangle.
Is it his bashing of others about not having any heart or lying to the fans...when he does the same thing. (see when he blamed a mexican for calling out Lance Armstrong when it was really him)
Is it his ability to perform in the cage? His ability to beat on someone until getting finished in the end? Then why does Todd Duffee get the shaft?
Is it because people believe that he is the only one that has a chance to beat Anderson (w/ bruised ribs).
Or maybe its cause he hasnt finished someone since 2007?
Please someone enlighten me as to why this man is held in such a light.
I think it was the trash talking and being able to make Anderson Silva look bad for the first time since 2004! Beating Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt helped his stock especially since he was coming off that loss to Damian Maia! But it was the Silva fight that convinced a lot of people that he was THE MAN!

I can't say for sure but I'm in the category that used to like him but now thinks he's really full of s**t.
I love me some Chael. I think most people take him far too serious. He's a comedian who can fight. His attitude is hilarious. I like wrestlers in general so that helps.
Timing. His notoriety soared when he started verbally abusing Anderson Silva at a time when the anger from the the MMA community over the Demian Maia fiasco was still fresh. Their new found approval for Chael was solidified when he backed up 95% of this smack talk, short of the triangle. He's interesting and a character who stands out personality-wise in the MMA world line up and some people just like that[/B.
nah something doesnt compute, if it was just about that particular incident then why hasnt the roid expose deterred fans? why hasnt the money laundering scandal woken the masses to what kind of a low life sonnen is? instead all was forgiven with most ppl even sympathising with him saying hes been hard done by.
Given chael's race and that of the ufc's target demo I dont know how one can deny that that correlation isnt the main driving force behind his new found popularity ..

Add in to the fact he is very entertaining, whereas if someone boring like Carwin (or whoever) was to act in this manner, then they probably wouldnt get such an easy ride.
Chael love is probably just a combination of respect for what he did to Anderson combined with his charisma and highly entertaining manner. Any further insight into why he is so popular whilst being an epic douche is beyond me.
Hope this helped.
Whats entertaining about insulting a culture, artform, race & nationality? Do you find klansmen charismatic too
just asking
