Chael Sonnen.........REALLY!!!??

I keep seeing all this love for Sonnen and how he should be able to fight. Granted the man didnt kill anyone and should be able to make a living. But why all the love for him,why do people wanna see him back in the octagon to fight Silva again. Jason Miller gets to be on TUF and its Chael this and Chael that.

Please clear this up is it strictly because of his ability to spew shit from his mouth at the speed of an Anderson Silva triangle.

Is it his bashing of others about not having any heart or lying to the fans...when he does the same thing. (see when he blamed a mexican for calling out Lance Armstrong when it was really him)

Is it his ability to perform in the cage? His ability to beat on someone until getting finished in the end? Then why does Todd Duffee get the shaft?

Is it because people believe that he is the only one that has a chance to beat Anderson (w/ bruised ribs).

Or maybe its cause he hasnt finished someone since 2007?

Please someone enlighten me as to why this man is held in such a light.

I suspect a lot of the Chael love is tongue in cheek. A lot of people also have a strong dislike for the man.

However, it cannot be denied that Chael is the most interesting and polarizing fighter (other than possibly Brock Lesnar) in the UFC today. Love him or hate him, he is damned entertaining.

The other thing about Chael that endeared him to many is that he talked such relentless, seemingly ridiculous trash talk to the undisputed P4P King for so long, that the only way he would be able to save face would be to actually DO the things he said he would. Miraculously, and against the prior judgement of almost everyone, he did almost EXACTLY what he said he was going to do - he dominated and beat up the champion, and he came within a whisker of dethroning the unbeatable Anderson Silva.

Hate him or not, you have to respect him as a fighter. And he is funny. Though i will admit, people around here often overlook some of the shadier aspects of Chael Sonnens character, such as the illegal business dealings, and i cant speak for everyone, but for me i tend to forget about that because it has nothing to do with MMA.

The roid usage is a different story, but as i believe 95% of UFC fighters are using something that is on the banned substance list, i only deem him foolish for getting caught.

I can see all those points but when other fighters do the same thing, all be it not as effective, they get labeled. Why not Chael too, why does he get a pass cause he is so over the top ridiculous it ends up being funny.

Timing. His notoriety soared when he started verbally abusing Anderson Silva at a time when the anger from the the MMA community over the Demian Maia fiasco was still fresh. Their new found approval for Chael was solidified when he backed up 95% of this smack talk, short of the triangle. He's interesting and a character who stands out personality-wise in the MMA world line up and some people just like that.

Thats probably the reason, Chael did something that was for my mind unprecedented in his ability to back up that level of trash talk. Fighters talk smack all the time, but never to the extent Chael did and i have NEVER in my years of watching MMA seen it backed up so convincingly. That demands respect.

Add in to the fact he is very entertaining, whereas if someone boring like Carwin (or whoever) was to act in this manner, then they probably wouldnt get such an easy ride.

Chael love is probably just a combination of respect for what he did to Anderson combined with his charisma and highly entertaining manner. Any further insight into why he is so popular whilst being an epic douche is beyond me.

Hope this helped.

In short hes white and happens to be american, u can get away with a whole hell of a lot when u fall into that category. The fact that he somewhat humbled someone thats was perceived to be a bully also tipped the scales. Its like ppl want to live through him vicariously only they expose their hypocrisy by doing so because they've demonized other fighters for less

To Live is 2 suffer, 2 survive? well that is 2 find meaning in the suffering

I think your analysis is quite a stretch...except for the bold part. Being the one to almost topple the champ, like Volcom mentioned - at a time when everyone wanted to see him go, is probably the best explanation.

Other fighters also get love even if they are doing the same things Chael does. Nick Diaz trash talks DURING fights and some people like him for it. Countless fighters have used steroids or at least been caught with banned substances in their system. He is no different. Several fighters have had legal troubles where they were found guilty yet people still support them. I don't think his skin color or nationality is giving him any preferential treatment.

I'm not sure that many fighters in the UFC can afford steroids lol, with the 6k undercard contracts.

Derrick Rose (NBA MVP) said 70% of the NBA is on PEDs, and those guys make a heck of a lot more than UFC fighters (minimum salary is $490,180 for a first year player).
