Ellenberger: 'I can outwrestle Fitch, Koscheck'

LAS VEGAS -- A couple of week’s back, after he beat journeyman Sean Pierson at UFC 129 via a first round knockout, Jake Ellenberger began calling out former No. 1 contender Jake Shields. Everything was Jake.

But Ellenberger broke his fourth metacarpal in his left hand in Toronto and has since been recovering from a surgical procedure he had done three weeks back. By the time he returns sometime in the fall, there could be any variety of top-10 talent available to UFC matchmaker Joe Silva to sic on Ellenberger.

Which is fine by the former D-II wrestling champion Ellenberger -- so long as Silva reads carefully the first part of that formula of giving him a “top-10” opponent.

“Honestly, I really don’t care who I fight,” Ellenberger said in Las Vegas ahead of UFC 130. “I definitely want to fight one of the top-10 guys -- Shields, [Jon] Fitch, [Josh] Koscheck, [Diego] Sanchez, any of those guys, man. I’m still getting better, and I’m ready for one of those guys.”

Asked to narrow that list on the premise of stylistic match-ups, Ellenberger didn’t hesitate.

“Fitch or Koscheck, you know, either one of them, they’re both up there in the top-10,” he said. “They’re veterans, and they’ve been around for a long time. I feel confident. My training keeps getting better and better, and I keep training with better guys like Mark Munoz and Rafael Cordeiro. My confidence is high right now.

“I think I can outwrestle guys like Fitch and Koscheck. They’re fantastic fighters. I have nothing bad to say about them, but I feel I’m ready for that level of opponent.”

I think he'd be back and forth with Fitch but he'd eventually get outworked if his cardio doesn't improve. now Koscheck, i'm not so sure about that.

If he means out wrestle them as in him getting taken down and pressed up against the cage on numerous occasions, then yes, he will surely out wrestle them.

he is on a good run with some impressive wins under his belt in the last year or so, and Kos really could do with an opponent about now, I say give him Kos and lets see if he can prove it

What he has said is true. Ellenberger's take downs are actually on par with GSP's. In terms of JUST take down ability though. On the ground, his transitioning and control needs some work but his take downs and take down defense is the very best in the division.

He would out wrestle both Josh and Fitch and probably beat them up standing too.

Cardio could be a factor though.

But like I said from just a raw take downs and take down defense perspective, this kid is a monster.

He very well could out wrestle Jon... but there's no way in hell he could out grapple him. Jon is a lot like Shields in that he's far mreo a complete grappler than just a wrestler.

I'd love to see Ellenberger beat up on Kos though.

He is good enough to keep it close with both of them and if you can do that you have a shot at winning the fight. I think he would have a harder time with Kos than Fitch and I wouldn't favor him in either fight but I would bet on him if the odds were great.

I don't see him getting Fitch or Kos, I wouldn't mind seeing him fight Sanchez though. I believe he could wreck him, he's bigger and stronger, got better wrestling and his standup is pretty decent.

Thanks to limba for this AWESOME sig

He is wrong, but it would be funny to see him spend his entire fight on his back.
