DFW: Pettis will probably have to fight again + pettis response

"That kid's in a bad position. He's supposed to be the next in line. All this craziness happens. [Edgar and Maynard] both get hurt, and it gets pushed back again. The first one is a draw, then they get hurt, and it gets pushed back again. But this is one of those things that happens in a sport like this. I respect [Pettis] for stepping up and taking on a tough guy like Guida, and he'll probably have to fight again before he gets a shot at one of those guys. Sucks for him. It's a shitty position for him to be in."

TUF 13: Thereís No Crying in MMA; Anthony Pettis Willing To Earn Title Shot

ďI donít mind; tell Dana not to feel bad. I donít really care,Ē Pettis told MMAWeekly Radio. ďIíll take another fight, Iíll take two fights if I have to, I really donít mind. For me, itís just Iím in the UFC, Iím young, and Iíve got a lot of talent so the sky is the limit. Iím going to get my title shot whether itís this year or next year. Iím going to earn it.Ē

Whether it was jealousy or not, Pettis isnít sure why everyone was so upset at him for getting a title shot, but heís happy to prove to each and every one of them why he should be considered a top contender.

ďIím like the most popular UFC fighter that ainít fought in the UFC yet. I think for sure got some people envious and jealous of my position, but I worked to get where Iím at. I paid a lot of dues in this sport, and it shows in the fights,Ē Pettis stated.

ďIf people donít believe now, give me time. I had to make my WEC debut and look where I got in two years. Iím making my UFC debut, give me some time, and I guarantee Iím going to turn all the people who donít believe into believers.Ē

Thatís exactly why Pettis asked the UFC to give him Guida for his debut fight.

ďI actually asked for that fight,Ē Pettis revealed. ďI asked for the Guida fight just because of his style and his level of popularity and where heís at in his career right now. Heís one of the top lightweights, and I could have took an easier fighter or a guy thatís not top ten, but Iím like Iím going to go for it. This is definitely a big test ahead of me.Ē

For his camp, Pettis worked his wrestling quite a bit and even trained with Bellator champion and former Olympian Ben Askren to prepare for Guida. He says if Guida believes heís going to just outwrestle him en route to a decision win, heís got another thing coming.

ďYouíre going to see the strongest and most skilled Anthony Pettis ever. My wrestling is ten times the level it was in the Ben Henderson fight, so if Clay thinks heís going to come in there and take me down at will, heís going to have a long night,Ē Pettis stated.

If someone thinks heís just a highlight reel kick that made SportsCenter, Pettis is ready to prove heís not a one-trick pony.

ďI donít want to be remembered just for the kick. I have a long career ahead of me, and I think Iím going to have a lot more moments like that in my career.Ē

Beat me to it...

Honestly i feel this is really F*UCKED UP!!!

Pettis went from guaranteed title shot to needing to win 2 fights in order to get a title shot.

That's ridiculous.

October 2010

Dana White: Ben Henderson ó Anthony Pettis winner gets shot at UFC title

Quote:
As UFC President Dana White announced today that the WEC will merge its bantamweight, featherweight, and lightweight classes into the UFC in 2011, he also confirmed that the winner of the upcoming WEC 155 title bout between Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis will get a shot at the winner of the UFC title bout between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard at UFC 125.
May 2011

Anthony Pettis Still Gets A UFC Lightweight Title Shot If He Beats Clay Guida in June

Quote:
ďItís Pettis,Ē UFC President Dana White confirmed when asked who would be getting the next crack at the championship.

And i don't udnerstan why Dana is saying this just 3 days before the fight.
It's a pretty negative message he's sending.

I hope Pettis doesn't let this news affect him and takes this fight.

TRUE FIGHTER !!!

i see what you mean but come on...we have to look at the situation as it is, just because dad promised he would take us to the zoo this weekend doesnt mean he has to even though he just got put in a coma (though it would be funny to push him around the zoo while hes in those hospital beds)

anyway, look at what happened, the division is kind of stuck now, with A LOT more contenders than before, UFC cant predict the future, things just keep piling up, he was supposed to get the winner of maynard and edgar, they fought in january! and there still isnt a winner 5 months later! lol

and all this time made some serious contenders rise up, why should pettis pull a rashad and keep waiting? after so much time and so many changes in rankings i think its only logical he should prove himself more against the new contenders

i love pettis as much as the next guy (future champ no doubt) but i agree that he does have to prove himself more now

and the great thing about it is he doesnt mind, he will fight, like you said, hes a true fighter, he knows how good he is and i want to see him fight more before a title shot actually, damn he trained with askren for this fight, his TDD was already very impressive, cant imagine how good it will be now...look out maynard

this kid might be the next aldo and JBJ...he learns things so fast, is very well rounded, and has a great attitude + unlimited creativity (hes done a lot more creative things other than that kick...and i bet theres a lot more to come)

yeah...i said it...

I understand what you're saying, about ptomises and stuf like that.
It's just that it's so hard to udnerstand this situation.

He went from guaranteed title shot ---> to 1 win away from a title shot ---> to 2 wins away from title shot!
In under 6 months.
Without losing a fight.

I'm just happy he took it like that and doesn't seem to mind this whole situation.

(PS: he's my fav LW btw )

I guess i'm more upset because he was out for so long - almost 6 months - without being injured; just because he was caught up in all this title shot drama...

That Edgar-Maynard title fight + injuries really ****ed up the LW division. Especially now, when this division is the best it's ever been: so many fighters on great winning streaks: Miller, Guillard, Siver, Guida + Pettis and Henderson. And you could add Melendez in the next 12 months also.

Edgar vs Maynard 2 was cursed!

I say this, Anthony needs to take his time before he gets thrown into a title shot in the big leeagues. Reason is this he is young exciting LW and has been thrown into the limelight about to fight (possibly put on a great show) against the king of the gate keepers Guida. So after this he should go straight to the top.....lets take a look at someone that was in this exact same position.

A young kid with only 1 loss on their record, exciting, one the cover of sports illustrated (pettis on ESPN) and got to fight Guida. Then went up to the top tier (I thought to quick) then lost 2 in a row and quit to go try movies. Then came back and is just another fight.

LOL

Don't compare Pettis to Huerta.

Pettis is a much much much more talented fighter.
And this is coming from someone who is a big Roger Huerta fan.

Pettis is a huge talent and he trains in one of the best gyms in the world.
Huerta didn't have that. Huerta never trained in a great camp. Huge potential, but bad camp choices.

And he still gave Maynard an incredible fight, after more than a year absence from the ring.

Pettis is a completely different fighter.

The comparison you made isn't good. Sorry.

Not comparing them talent wise, I agree that Roger was probably a few steps behind where Pettis is now. I just mean that we have seen the story about the young fighter thrown to the wolves to quick on the strength of their hype and popularity. I just think Pettis can take the same road as Jones and become a one of the greats.

Pettis is an intelligenr fighter...and person.

And he is part of one of the best gyms in the world, syrrounded by people who can only help him improve.

He really can become one of the best fighters in the world.
In terms of talent he is right there at the top. He just needs to refine his skills.

And for that he needs chances to prove it.

Like i;ve said. I love the fact that he doesn't seem let Dana's announcement affect him.

Great positive attitude.
Others could learn from Pettis...

Pettis has talent, and he's got the right attitude. I love that his passion is obviously fighting, and not holding out for titles (coughFitchRashadcough).
