Spike TV already acting like a bitter ex

Quote:
Between the suggestions that Spike TV intentionally buried TUF 13 with its earlier time-slot, Dana White’s complaints about the show’s forcibly-shortened season, and the recent reports that the UFC has been negotiating for a new cable parter (or even a channel of its own), we knew that the relationship between the UFC and Spike wasn’t rock-solid these days. But now we’re entering hateful ex-girlfriend territory. From SBNation (via Fightlinker):

Spike TV announced today a 10-hour marathon on Sunday, June 26th, featuring fight cards with UFC middleweight turned welterweight Nate Marquardt. However, the event runs directly parallel to the Marquardt-headlined live event on Versus, UFC on Versus 4…The event culminates with a re-broadcast of UFC Fight Night 22, which was headlined by Nate Marquardt vs. Rousimar Palhares…

Coincidentally, this marathon directly overlaps with a live Marquardt-headlined UFC event on the Versus channel, UFC on Versus 4 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET. Marquardt faces Rick Story in the main event as part of his welterweight debut…

SB Nation reached out to Spike TV officials for further comment. Specifically, we asked why they would run this marathon to overlap with the UFC’s live show on Versus and why these particular fights of all Marquardt’s UFC fights were selected. “We picked a 10 hour marathon of exciting, hard-hitting , action-packed fights showcasing not only Nate ‘The Great’ – but some of the sport’s biggest names including Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen,” said David Schwarz, Vice President of Communications at Spike TV.

The ‘UFC Live’ shows on Versus — headlined twice by Jon Jones, and once by Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampmann — have seen a steady decline in ratings since their debut. Marquardt vs. Story probably isn’t going to bring viewers out in droves on a Sunday night, and Spike’s upcoming Marquardt-athon could cause just enough confusion to push the Versus audience even lower.

It’s not exactly a move you pull when negotiations are still ongoing; Dana White may have told Spike to go **** themselves one too many times. The weird part is, there’s little incentive for Spike here except the joy in knowing they screwed with somebody they don’t like. That’s how bad things have gotten, I guess. As they say: Live by the counter-programming, die by the counter-programming.

Good for us the fans but business-wise kind of a low blow :P

The only ratings they're gonna steal are from the people who left their TV on before going to sleep.

I have no idea why UFC is dealing with VERSUS. It's an obscure channel that no one watches, not even MMA fans care for it. On the other hand, SPIKE is synonymous with UFC. They have a long history and are both responsible for each others success. So why mess with something that isn't broken?

Only good thing about this story is Dana gets a taste of his own medicine and realizes counter-programming is a bitch

UFC was the only good thing on Spike. Spike should have bent over backwards to keep them happy in my opinion.

It's kind of a strange situation anyway. I mean, they're both broadcasting a product of Zuffa/UFC. Either way, I guess UFC wins. Not going to pretend I know anything about these kind of things though, so I'm probably missing something somehow. But it sure seems like a strange way to get back at UFC.

I'll be streaming the VS show since Dish network doesn't carry it unless you have the highest priced package, which is nuts.

Showtime, HDNET, Versus... this is ridiculous. These networks are either a.) overpriced and stupid or b.) obscure or both.

C'mon Zuffa, man the **** up already and push to be on a real network.

Hopefully UFC will get on ESPN, ABC, NBC, or CBS like every other major sports league in America in due time. Yes i know UFC isnt a sports league, but the point is Spike TV doesnt exactly scream credibility when it comes to sports.

They use to air WEC perhaps before zuffa even purchsed the company.. I'm betting the contract WEC/ZUFFA had with versus was terminated prematurely when they decided to merge wec with the ufc.And one of the caveats before proceeding with the demolition was to provide versus with some MMA..

We dont know what the ufc was valued at pre-spike but one thing is for certain they are valued at alot more today. Are they suppose to lower their price (devalue their product) because their network partner are too financially strapped to match their demands? They have outgrown spike and should really be considering either using versus to get in good with NBC or use showtime to get in with CBS..Will leaving spike hurt them? yup becuz they will never get that freedom again..In saying that they still need to leave

To Live is 2 suffer, 2 survive? well that is 2 find meaning in the suffering
