Nick Diaz vs GSP

Why is this not a title unification bout? It makes so much sense...Strikeforce champ vs UFC champ. Why would Diaz relinquish his belt? Sometimes those in power seem to be so dumb....

Wouldn't a title unification fight help to market the PPV?

Well firstly i believe Diaz had to relinquish the belt so he could fight in the UFC

Secondly i dont really think marketing as a unification fight or even having both belts on the line would matter much since they probably market it as champion vs champion anyways.

Nate has a belt? lmao

I agree though - I believe Nick v GSP should be a title unification bout. However, as the SF WW belt is being vacated, it'll purely be used to raise an up-and-comers stock (eg, Woodley).

Thanks to limba for this AWESOME sig

If it gets unified then what happens to the WW's in SF? Do they no longer have a goal anymore. Or does the winner have to defend their belt in both companies. They are still seperate and its clear that if you want to fight in the UFC you willnot be fighting anywhere else. This should make SF fights a do or die, cause its just a matter of time before they disolve that company and take their fighters. I would look for this to happen after the Showtime contract is up.

I-ya,
I against I,
flesh of my flesh,
and mind of my mind,
two of a kind but one won't survive,
my images reflect in the enemies eye,
and his images reflect in mine the same time

Dana probably wants to promote the UFC "brand" as superior to that of Strikeforce. If Diaz were to beat GSP for both belts, Dana would think it cheapens "his" brand in the eyes of the MMA fans. Dana is all about branding. It can be seen in the use of the term Octogon (as opposed to cage) to announcing a fighters MMA record followed by his record in the UFC.

I guess I just answered my own question...lol.
