Gracie wants 7 figures for UFC 134

Code:
Royce Gracie has confirmed that he is looking for at least
one million dollars to appear at UFC 134.

Gracie, who won three of the first four UFC tournaments and is
one of the fathers of MMA, appeared on Brazilian show Sensei
SporTV this week to renew his calls for a spot on the UFC Rio card.

“Matt Hughes in the Octagon in Rio would be ideal. He’s the one I’m after,”
Gracie said, hungry for a rematch of their UFC 60 meeting which
ended in a first-round TKO win for Hughes. “In that fight
with him I’d gone overboard in training. Dad [Helio Gracie]
told me ‘That’s a mistake.’”

After the loss Gracie faced some criticism for not having
moved with the times and having the same kind of game he
had in the very first UFC event, some twelve years previously.

“I’ve been doing Jiu-Jitsu for 44 years. I always kept
my mind open to other styles but just to know what I may
be up against. I’m not going to learn wrestling to try
and take down Matt Hughes,” he said, before outlining
his belief that it is better to be deep in one art than shallow in many.

“If I go and train MMA, what does that mean? Training
MMA is [for] Kimbo Slice. Can he stand and bang with
a boxer? No. Can he put up a good fight on the ground?
No. He’s a tough guy, but he’s not good. MMA isn’t
a martial art [in itself]. You have to have somewhere
you come from, you have to know an art.”

As for his hopes of appearing at UFC 134, there has
been no word from the promotion on whether he will
be invited to fight, although it doesn’t appear
likely as the card is filling up rapidly. Gracie
wants a slot badly - but wants top dollar as well.

“Dana White knows what I’m worth; he knows what I
bring to the table. Yes, my fight purse has seven
digits!” he confirmed with a laugh.

Royce goota be crazy. I'll never dispute the fact
that he helped put MMA on the map. I pioneer even.
But come on, that was nearly 20 years ago!!

Let it go Royce. You're not worth that much anymore.
I'd like to see Royce at 134 in some capacity or
another but he really is over-valuing himself.

I'll always have respect for Royce but I think hes being a bit dilusional here.

I'm not sure he is dillusional, and while I certainly understand where you're coming from, and his value from an American perspective, you've also got to consider his level of notoriety and drawing power in Brazil.

I think this is one of those things where what Royce is asking for makes sense based on how much him being on the card would draw. He's huge in Brazil, and if it makes mathmatical sense to pay him 1,000,000 -- I could certainly see Dana doing it. So, while I do think it's a hefty sum, both Royce and Dana I'm certain are aware that he's not asking that much because he believes himself to be worth that much as a fighter, but as a name in Brazil, Royce can definitely draw.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Dana pay the money. Yeah hes big in Brazil obviously I just personally don't believe an appearance from Royce is worth 1 mil. I mean, the pay-per-view is already sold out. The fact that Royce might be there could possibly attract a few more buys, say from the BJJ crowd. But anyone in Brazil who is even remotely interested in MMA, and can afford it, would have already purchased the event.

I just can't see UFC making enough money from paying Royce 1 mil.

Hughes would beat him worse than the first time. Total mis-match.

7 figures? Royce has lost his frakin mind. I would love to see him on the card but I'm not sure there's even someone in the UFC that would not destroy him easily.

Before the neg reps come... Royce was my hero when I was a kid. The sport has moved on. Royce should stick with what he's good at and train people. Not go through a mid life crisis remembering his glory days where he beat a bunch of other one dimensional fighters who were versed in inefective martial arts before MMA really existed.

Why would Royce want to put a downer on the evening by getting crushed by Hughes again? Talk about demoralizing the crowd. Danas not that stupid.

Seems Like Royce has been learning how to stay undefeated from Rickson.

It wouldn't make sense for the UFC to pay this sort of money for someone who isn't likely to increase viewership by much. UFC 134 already sold out, chances are it will be shown free in Brazil, and in the US most people remember the last fight well enough to not really want to see it happen again, or worse.

I would not be surprised if he was paid to appear though and to give a short talk about how great it is that the UFC is back in Brazil.

Here's an idea. How about Rocye vs Rickson at UFC 134. That way there's no demoralizing to the crowd. Rickson would win but at least that would be entertaining.

Thats almost thread worthy

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that Hughes is already scheduled to fight Diego Sanchez and so this fight isn't going to happen. Royce Gracie and the whole Gracie family are a bunch of clowns IMO
