The UFC is targeting a fall matchup between top five welterweight contenders Carlos Condit and BJ Penn, putting aside for now thoughts of a potential rematch between Penn and Jon Fitch.

Both sides have been approached about the fight and have shown interest.

Condit, a winner of four straight fights, agreed to the bout immediately, and publicly challenged Penn to accept, tweeting to Penn, "The people have spoken [BJ], they want to see us scrap. Let's give 'em what they asked for."

Later, Penn tweeted back, "Yup. Let's do it! October 29th."

The date, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, is not a lock, but the matchup is the desired goal of the UFC.

It was originally believed that a Penn vs. Fitch rematch was the intended direction of the promotion. The two fought to a draw in the main event of UFC 127, and afterward, UFC president Dana White indicated that a rematch was possible.

Now, it looks like Penn and Condit will square off instead.

The 27-year-old Condit (27-5) is coming off a spectacular first-round knockout of previously unbeaten Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 132. Condit has won 12 of his last 13 fights overall, losing only in a controversial split-decision to Martin Kampmann in April 2009.

Meanwhile, Penn hasn't fought since the February draw with Fitch. Prior to that, he returned to the welterweight division with a 21-second knockout of Matt Hughes in November 2010.

It appears the frontrunner for the Condit-Penn bout is UFC 137, which will take place on October 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. On that card, welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will take on Nick Diaz. It's likely that on the same night, Condit will have a chance to earn a title shot with a win over the legendary Penn.

Condit Penn is an intersting fight.

Condit would have the size advantage, but that matters more with a really strong wrestling background, which he doesn't have. I'll have to think it over, tough one to call, I can see it going almost any way, TKO for either guy, decision either guy.

Condit is tough to finish, but doesn't have the wrestling that gives BJ fits, or Edgars speed, so I guess I'd pick BJ by decision, but tough call.

I think when Silva says "fans don't want to see it" he means BJ fans don't want to see it because they know damn well he'd lose. I wanted to see Penn-Fitch II so Fitch could erase any doubt from the first fight. Anyway, Penn-Condit will certainly be entertaining, that fight is BJ's to lose. If he mixes up some wrestling with the stand up he'd win comfortably, if he doesn't Condit could take a decision. I can't see Condit finishing BJ.

No Silva said "fans dont want to see it" is because ALL mma fans do not want to waste w/e time Bj Penn has left in this sport against a boring fighter. Fans want Bj Penn in wars.

Im quite happy here Penn vs Condit will be a better fight. As a fan im very happy to not see Jon Fitch fights and this is one less that I will have to watch. Happy days.

Fitch: "BJ, you broke my heart"

Fitch via Twitta: "you broke my heart BJ, I thought u were a man of principle"

Poor Fitch, he always gets the short end of the stick, but at the same time, its his fault he fights so boring, if he grew sum ballz he would practice his stand up more and bring that confidence to the ring and strike.
It was Joe Silva that didn't make the fight, not BJ...

Confused, how is it BJ's fault that Dana wasn't interested in a rematch?

at the same time, there must've been a point where Dana asked BJ if he really wanted this fight. BJ could've been really adament to fight Fitch again, so I think thats what he means. But the fans have spoken, BJ only has a couple, maybe half dozen fights left, I just rewatched Ufc 127 and it was pretty damn boring fight, even if BJ was fighting. Fitch is just too smart and too technical to be choked out that early in a fight. And the rest of the fight was Fitchville, Snorlax town.

I've re-watched this fight many times and I must say, even though it looks like Penn is 'morally defeated' at the end... he won that fight.

I had him rd 1 & 2 while Fitch winning the 3rd (10-9).

The problem is Fitch is a gamer, a great fighter but his style is not highly marketable. He needs to make a statement with some trash talk and decisively break his next opponent (Hoping it will be vs. Shields).

One could dream... but Fitch is the only one whom can choose his path...

That's bullshit. Fitch gets robbed of a W because "the fans don't want it?" **** you Silva, I want it. That was arguably the most exciting fight on that card and probably one of Jon's best fights (entertainment wise) to date. You guys are just trying to shaft him b ecause you don't like him and/or you don't want to see him crush your sweet Baby Jay.

http://blog.fightmetric.com/2011/02/...tatistics.html

Fitch landed 149 strikes and went from bell to bell with constant pressure.

Know what BJ did? He landed 2 strikes. One of those from his back.

Nope, not a 10-8.Nor did Jon land a lot of clean shots...
