UFC has none of those things

"When HBO attatches itself to boxing, it attaches itself to joe lewis, sugar ray robinson, and muhammad ali. It attaches itself to history, achievement and glory. UFC has none of those things, and it will tarnish HBO's boxing franchise."

Seth Abraham (former president and chief executive officer of time warner sports)

YouTube - Muhammad Ali & Fedor

what you guys think?
ignorence/truth/ or hes worried boxing will be overshadowed?

it will tarnish HBO's boxing franchise. But not because it doesent have Boxings history but because it is a better sport than boxing. People find it more exciting. People feel like it is more real. And it doesent seem to matter what he says because it is on HBO regradless.

ignorance, yes... resistance to change, yes. refusal to accept progress, yes... unwillingness to accept that boxing has become a joke and tarnished its own reputation long since before MMA came around. MMA... respectible, boxing, worthless...

I think that boxing does have a history - obviously MMA is much newer, it is the wave of the future. Honestly I used to be a huge boxing fan, but now when I watch, even good matches like hopkins/de la hoya, Im bored as hell. MMA has ruined boxing for me, and I couldn't be more happy about it.

It's pretty obvious why this guy is the "former" president and CEO of Time Warner Sports. Boxing may have a history that MMA doesn't, but it doesn't have the future that MMA does. What he doesn't understand is that TV is about ratings. People aren't going to watch two boring fighters go a decision because Joe Louis was a great fighter. It has history, but history does not equal ratings. What makes his comments so ridiculous is that guys like Joe Louis and Ali didn't even fight on HBO. They are not part of HBO's history. They're part of boxing's history. They have no connection to HBO whatsoever.

Well said. Frankly it shocks me that sports stations are so slow in reporting on MMA. NBC has taken a big step forward with their coverage, even if it is a quite limited. Nevertheless they are one of the first up to the plate, and my guess is that it will pay off financially in the next 5 years, big time

Long story short, so many more things can happen in MMA than boxing. Until recently the mainstream public was unaware of this. After watching MMA for the last couple years, I am only maybe excited once a year for a boxing match. Even then, they punch each other, it is nothing like a "real" fight. yeah they are awesome with their hands, but any good MMA fighter could go in the ring, take them down and submit their ass! That just ruins it for me!

Either a fool, or just sour grapes.

HBO and any one with half a brain will have seen the dominance of the UFC on last year's sports pay-per-views rankings, the growth in its popularity and figured out where things are going to go from here.

Meanwhile it is obvious that boxing is in long-term decline.

But HBO already has lots of fight fans, so probably it can convert most of them to MMA fans.

HBO isn't tarnishing its franchise- it's building a new strong one from a dieing old one.
