Is it illegal...

Is it illegal to break a guy's finger in the octagon? Like, if you're on the ground and a guy has your back, can you grab his finger and bend it backwards? Wouldn't that be a submission?

It is illegal. I believe the specific rules state "no small joint manipulation." Basically, no bending toes or fingers back for submissions. Also no fish hooks, eye gouges, etc.

Yes; that would be small joint manipulation, and under the Unified Rules of MMA, would be illegal.

Cool, thanks. When the UFC used to display the rules of the octagon, I don't remember seeing anything of that nature. Makes sense and I'm glad there are rules against it.

Small Joint manipulation is illegal.. but that does bring up a good question..

While in the full mount.. why not just choke them out with "strangle" method? Like Chung Lee tried to do in one of his bouts.. From what I understand that move was illegal.. But I guess not... is it a under used method? hehe

Well, besides the fact that it would leave your arms in a pretty precarious posiiton in terms of armbars and/or triangle attacks from the bottom, it would likely violate the following rule:

"Throat strikes of any kind, including, without limitation, grabbing the trachea"

armbar or triangle from being on the bottom of a full mount? has that ever been done? the only thing i see happening is being bumped off...

but i did think it was an illegal move.. but cung lee wasn't warned or stopped when he literally tried to strangle scott smith in the rematch

Grabbing the opponents cheek from behind and pulling it away from the gumline with your fingers. You can make a pretty good gash in someones mouth very quickly.
