If he actually has Social Anxiety Disorder, which it appears he does from the article, then I think Dana White would be wrong and inconsiderate to cut him from the UFC.
Mental illness is just as legitimate as any other illness and should be treated as such, and it would make sense that Diaz would have debilitating anxiety when he has to give the biggest press conference for the biggest fight against the biggest fighter of his LIFE.
I'm sure some people are thinking "well if he's so anxious then how does he get in a cage and fight" but fighting is not a social activity and as such it has no significant relevance to social anxiety disorder. In fact, one could argue that fighting is inherently an ANTI-social activity.

Furthermore, this isn't the first time we've seen something like this. Old NFL fans like myself will tell you that Ricky Williams also had social anxiety disorder; he would give interviews and press conferences with his helmet on because he would get so afraid of talking but that didnt stop him from being a monster on the field. Unfortunately, like Diaz, his anxiety hurt his career by leading him to retire prematurely (and temporarily) from football and also "self-medicate" with constant marijuana usage.

It's precisely the reason Ricky smoked tons of pot and used to do interviews with his helmet (equipped with dark visor) on.

People thought he was aloof, but it turned out he had really crippling social anxiety disorder. Eventually he got help for his condition.

Someone needs to hook Diaz up with Ricky's therapist.

This is what Dana was referring to when he would say "If only Nick would learn to play the game". I would hope Diaz takes it upon himself to seek out help for what appears to be an obvious disorder. Ever watch him in an interview? He's always uncomfortable and that causes him to be defensive and make foolish statements. Ignorant people will claim he is just dumb, but I actually Nick is an intelligent person. But if he is going to be in the entertainment business he is going to have to learn to be comfortable around people.

Cant blame the UFC on this one.

I'm probably going to get neg repped or something BUT....

He's known about this fight for months. Many many many people suffer with anxiety issues and seek help! It's a unification bout, it's going to get a lot of press. He should have manned up and sought help and done all the bull that the UFC was going to put him and GSP through leading up to the fight, and then got in the octagon and done his thing, win or lose. No doubt he's a great fighter and would have given GSP lots of trouble, especially standing IMO, but he couldn't man up and fix his problems. Cost him a shot at the big time, big show, big money he's begged for. If Marquardt got cut for his stunt I think there's no issues with Diaz getting the boot either.

He doesn't feel comfortable being around people," he said. "He has a very deep ingrained social anxiety, and it's something he probably needs help for, I think. I think that's why he self-medicates himself with the marijuana. That's my amateur opinion.
Having had issues with social anxiety myself i can totally understand and sympathise with Diaz. Dana White should have cut him some slack and let the kid fight.

Bingo, Isiah Ryder, Sam Perkins all were super star athletes who needed their ganja. It's the weirdest thing...without it they can't perform.

My initial thoughts were $$$ issues til I read this article. Thanks for updating us. That is the strangest thing...he could have at least gotten Cesar Gracie to do the press conference.

SERIOUSLY...WHAT THE HELL...THIS IS THE FIGHT OF HIS LIFE!!! *SHAKES HEAD*

What an ignorant thing to say. Nick has always been this way, dude dropped out of school at like 13, and from his interviews throughout his career he's clearly always been socially inept.

Don't you think if Nick was predisposed to mental illness then there's a high chance Nate would be too? Nate appears far better than Nick in social situations and i'm sure they smoke the same amount of weed.
