Report: Nick Diaz missed out on a HUGE payday against GSP

Quote:
Wrestling Observer writer Dave Meltzer had some interesting insight into the whole Nick Diaz UFC 137 saga that has dragged on over the past week. Specifically, Meltzer talked about how much money Diaz lost out on when he was removed from the main event fight with Georges St. Pierre. He was eventually inserted back into the picture in the co-main event against B.J. Penn, but Meltzer thinks he won't make much more for that fight than he would have if he had defended his Strikeforce welterweight title against Tyron Woodley. Here's what he had to say (WO is subscription-only):

Diaz was punished for no-showing in a big way, including being taken out of a fight he’s wanted for years and basically his career in UFC was at stake if he wouldn’t have faced Penn, The difference in what he’s going to make fighting Penn in the semifinal with what he would have made against St. Pierre is said to be in the seven figures due to the PPV cut. He’s also out of the title picture, at least for this year. He’s gone from seven figures, even if he lost, to essentially very slightly more than he would have made had he fought Tyron Woodley in Strikeforce for the welterweight title he vacated to get the St. Pierre fight.

For a guy that talks about money so much (or for anyone really), that's a huge, huge loss.

Now I know this dude isn't the most trustworthy source out there, but he seems to know things others doesn't from time to time. And if this is true, then damn - Diaz messed his crap up!

Also, remember the big payday they were talking about is likely including sponsors and, as the article mentions, a PPV percentage

I believe it, the UFC was counting on Diaz/GSP to draw some huge numbers and he was getting a PPV cut against the UFC's biggest draw in a fight that was being billed Champion vs Champion. Opportunities like that come around once in a lifetime and Diaz blew it.

Agreed and when he loses to Penn the selling angle will be lost and so will Diaz' payday.

I don't trust a single word Meltzer says but this one is kind of obvious.

That is pretty true. I hadnt actually thought about that, diaz talks about "getting paid" a lot but.. shit dude missed out on a just ridiculous amount of money here. Literally to spend a couple days talking shit to a guy, then a week to make the cut to 170, then 25minutes of getting hugged and lightly punched... Lets face it if diaz went into this fight just intending to lose he'd still have walked away with what 1.2mill? 1.5mill? Thats the kind of money you could walk away from the sport with and this is worst case scenario. If he had actually won.. The dude would be raking in money by the ass load.

the irony is that with such a payday, win or lose, he could have retired from work all together after that fight.

I'd bet when you add in sponsorship money that the difference is closer to 2 million. Dana White once said between sponsorship and PPV cut that Chuck was making like 5 million a fight. I think its realistic to think that main eventing with GSP Diaz could have made between 2.5 and 3 million. Likely will still make like 500K though.
