Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans Targeted for UFC 140

Quote:
HOUSTON -- Get ready for the grudge match.

The UFC is targeting December's UFC 140 for the long-awaited Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans light-heavyweight title bout, MMA Fighting has learned from sources with knowledge of the situation.

The fight is not yet official, but appears likely to be announced within the next 24-48 hours. UFC president Dana White told MMA Fighting that he could not yet announce a UFC 140 main event, but might possibly be able to do so by the end of the day.

Before that can happen, at least one hurdle must be overcome. Evans has to be cleared from a hand injury suffered in his recent UFC 133 win over Tito Ortiz. That injury required pins to be inserted into his hands, but Evans' coach Mike Van Arsdale told MMA Fighting that he was scheduled to visit the doctor on Wednesday and expected Evans to be cleared.

Van Arsdale told MMA Fighting he had no knowledge of the rumored December date, but said a clean bill of health would make Evans' participation in a Dec. 10 fight feasible.

"I think if they give us any date, I can get him ready to beat Jon," he said. "I'm not overly concerned about Jon like everyone else is. My fighter has the ability, tools and the determination to beat him. As long as he's healthy, and I have eight or nine weeks with him -- and it's right around that right now, that's all I need."

Jones, meanwhile, is coming off his fourth-round submission win over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 135 just two weeks ago. A bout at UFC 140 would mark a quick turnaround for the 24-year-old.

If UFC officials could navigate these issues, Jones and Evans will finally bring their long-held grudge to the octagon. The two were infamously once teammates at the Greg Jackson camp in New Mexico before parting ways earlier in 2011.

UFC 140 will take place in Toronto's Air Canada Centre. It will be the promotion's first time back since its massive Rogers Centre spectacle set records by drawing over 55,000 fans and an $11 million gate.

Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans targeted for UFC 140 headliner in Toronto

Quote:
UFC 140 appears to have a main event.

UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones (14-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) and top contender Rashad Evans (16-1-1 MMA, 11-1-1 UFC) are expected to headline the December event in Toronto.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed the tentative plans with a source close to the event. MMAFighting.com first reported the planned booking.

UFC 140 takes place Dec. 10 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The night's main card, including the five-round headliner, airs on pay-per-view.

This past weekend, White told MMAjunkie.com that despite Jones entering a post-UFC 135 conference wrapped in ice packs and hobbling, he was good to go (though he planned to give the fighters some rest).

"He's good," White, who recently met with the 24-year-old champ, said. "He's 100 percent. I talked to him [on Saturday], and he said he feels great. The only thing that's sore on him is his calf. It's a little sore."

Evans, who scored a TKO victory over Tito Ortiz on Aug. 6, was brought into the cage to hype his upcoming title fight with the champ.

With a budding rivalry with Quinton Jackson, Jones' UFC 135 fight did big business. The event drew the third-largest attendance of the year and also scored a healthy $2.1 million gate. Jones and Jackson's real-life rivalry provided plenty of storylines and brought significant media attention to the pay-per-view event.

But the buzz could see new heights with Evans, a former training partner who had a high-profile split with Team Jackson-Winkeljohn and head trainer Greg Jackson because of Jones. The fighters have bickered in the media, and their rivalry has been one of the year's biggest stories.

Jones enters the grudge match with five straight victories, including a title win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and the successful title defense against Jackson. In fact, his only career loss came early in his UFC career to Matt Hamill after Jones' was questionably disqualified due to illegal "12-to-6" elbow strikes. Jones otherwise dominated the December 2009 fight.

Evans, a former champ, is 3-0 since losing his title to Lyoto Machida in 2009. The recent wins have come over Thiago Silva, Jackson and Ortiz. A planned bout with Jones earlier this year fell apart due to the champ's uncertain health status. Evans went on to defeat Ortiz (a replacement for injured Phil Davis) while Jones ultimately was booked against Jackson.

So excited, I still don't know if I am going or not but how could I not now?

I can get there, I live very close to Toronto, the problem is when the UFC came here last time it was like $400 minimum even for the horrible seats. And that was when they had 70,000 seats. Now its only 25,000.

Damn, thats a hefty price tag. If you can afford it as a luxury, depending on the card as a whole, i'd seriously consider it. You gotta treat yourself every once in a while, right?

You know, the Rampage V Jones fight was supposed to be "off the hook" (do the kids still say that?). And what did we get there?

I honestly don't think Rashad has much of a chance against this guy. I know it doesn't always add up, but if Rashad couldn't take Rampage out, and Jones made Rampage look old and silly, then the equation means Jones should Dominate Evans.

In this case, I think it will add up. Machida beat Evans, easily, Rua beat Machida, Jones beat Rua, = Jones Victory.

I sense a lot of haters for this guy and I honestly don't know why. What's not to like?
