Demian Maia talks warming up with Chael "The peoples champ" Sonnen

Quote:
Demian Maia knows just how dangerous both Chael Sonnen and UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva are inside the Octagon, as the submission specialist owns a victory over Sonnen and a loss against Silva.

This past weekend at UFC 136, the submission savvy Brazilian even shared a locker room area with Sonnen. Maia defeated Jorge Santiago, while Sonnen stopped Brian Stann. After his win over Stann, Sonnen called out Silva for a rematch, something even Maia is interested in as he works his way back to being a top contender at 185 pounds.

Some may wonder how a fighter like Maia can handle preparing for a fight in the same area as Sonnen, but, according to Maia himself, it didn’t have any affect on him.

“I met him many times before, and it wasn’t any different, he was respectful,” said Maia, in an interview with Tatame. “I have no troubles with him. Each one of us was warming up, with our minds on our bouts.”

Maia had Santiago in full control, taking a decision on all three scorecards to get back on track after a loss to Mark Munoz< in June at UFC 131. Maia is now 3-1 in his last four fights since falling to Silva by decision. He also holds a 2009 win over Sonnen where he submitted him midway through the bout’s opening round using a Triangle Choke.

Sonnen-Silva II has not been scheduled, but most feel like it is only a matter of time before the UFC books it for a card in 2012. Silva is currently rehabbing a shoulder injury, and Sonnen isn’t licensed to fight in Nevada, so those are two obstacles needing clearance before the bout can be signed.

“I guess Anderson would be harder to submit on the ground than Stann, because Anderson trains with experts, but Chael doesn’t depend on the submission – he can work on the ground and pound,” said Maia, of a potential rematch. “He’ll be training his takedown defense so he doesn’t get in trouble like it happened to him before.”

As for his own future, Maia says he will take some time off before stepping back inside the Octagon.
I am driving the Chael train for 3 reasons.

1. The dude comes to Fight and backs his smack talk up.

2. You can tell he is a really nice polite guy but has became so good at promotion that he can fool people in to believing that the trash talk Sonnen is the real Sonnen. He has increased his stock more by talking then he ever would have by only fighting.

3.The man is a straight hoot.

There's no doubt he's a talented orator. Deep down I believe he has serious insecurities and utilizes these tactical jabs to overcompensate for it. I remember hearing how his father use to drive him hard or was a task master. Now that he's passed he's got nothing to show for. When his time is done in MMA some will still talk about em, but majority of the people won't even care. There's a difference between Jordan smack talking on the court or Ali. They've won multiple championships and have been around the block.

What kind of accolades does Chael have...a WEC antique belt and silver medal. He always comes up short and is second best...

Look at his business dealings. It's plagued with fraud. This man is NOT an honourable human being and deserves to get what is coming. Will see who gets retired...

Not an honorable human being??? The fraud thing is hardly proof of that. Chael is human like the rest of us and messed up like the rest of us. If he is a polite, kind, honest man outside of what we see from the MMA image then to me he is a honorable man. The whole HRT business is too shady for me to accuse him of being a straight roid head. The commission never went after Chael for abusing steroids AND they are not the type to shorten a suspension UNLESS they realized they kind of messed up themselves. Plus tbh iv never been against roids and i believe every athlete should take them, if i was a professional athlete i would definitely take them because that is how i would provide for my family and i would want to be the best i can be. So i guess you could say i am not honorable but at the same time im the type of person that would take the shirt off my back and give it to someone that needs it. Im the type of person that doesnt mind getting woken up at 2-3am to go pick a stranded friend up. Im the type of person that does not mind picking up the tab and not expecting the person to get me back. If Chaels has those qualities then imo he is more honorable then a guy with a clean past that does not posses these other qualities.

Thats my opinion ofcourse... and i would never get upset for someone thinking differently.

I dunno I use to root for him till he started with his verbal diarrhea. I admit sometimes it is funny, but if you start to analyze this guy there's a lot of skeletons in the closet. Is it a coincidence of what's happened in his business dealings, PED incident, and the way he has chosen to portray himself.

If he's actually the nicest guy in the world then he's fooled everyone. But deep down I believe lurks an intelligent, but troubled mind.

What I don't understand is why he's targeting Anderson's wife. On one end it can be deemed as humourous, but lets flip the script. Imagine you're the king pin smashing all the records, voted as the GOAT, beat this shit talker, and now he's still asking for more. What's your reaction...

So bottom line this fight will probably happen and I do believe someone will get retired.

This is personal now with Anderson.

I like how people try to give Sonnen a clean chit by saying "it's just marketing / smack talk, off screen he is a really nice guy".

Newsflash, you can't just disown the ethical and moral implications of all your actions on the job, in a particular environment or under any chemical influence. You are ALWAYS responsible for your actions.

It's not like a guy can sexually harass some chick at the workplace because he's being a "tough boss" but comes home and is a nice guy and it's all ok. Because hey he's just putting on a persona in the workplace. Or it's not like you can get drunk and sleep with your buddy's gf, but it's ok because man you were hammered and outta control. Or massacre a bunch of people while you're tweaked out on crack. Or act like dicks behind the anonymity of the internet but walk around like misunderstood angels in real life.

I see this kinda excuse making all the time ... fact is people use these fig leaf covers as excuses to do things that they were repressing anyway. Whatever they do is part of them. And whatever your actions, you pay for them regardless of whatever excuse you put on it.

Case in point, the fact that Tito just talked shit about other fighters and disrespecting legends for "marketing" his fights didn't keep those pissed off fighters from spanking him and knocking him out, or his disrespect coming full circle and guys like Mitrione humiliating him now that his chips were down.

And Sonnen's time is coming. He's just setting himself up for the big fall... I liked how he called out Anderson originally because of how arrogant Silva was being, but his lying, cheating, childish ass has gone way too far. I hope Silva knocks his head off all the way to Portland.

"The peoples champ" ???

More newsflash, just because you and 3 more guys on this board like the troll, it doesn't make him "The peoples champ".

McCall, Faber, Aldo, Nate, Nick, Lyoto, TBD, Hunt
Forever hanging in Anderson Silva nuts

Chael is a cheat, a compulsive liar, a fraud and a coward. BUT, hey, his rehearsed interviews are quite funny at times, so lets forget all of that other stuff.

He calls Wanderlei Silva all the names in the book to the cameras and media and then he is confronted with the man face to face. What does he do? Keeps his mouth SHUT and stays as quiet as a church mouse. He had an opportunity to explain to Wanderlei what he meant by his comments towards him and he goes all silent. THEN! after the confrontation he continues to call and harass Wanderlei to the cameras and media. That right there, is the definition of a COWARD. A two faced, lying, coward.

He can't shut up about Anderson Silva, insult after insult leading up to the fight, he says that Anderson "Wouldn't ever look me in the eye". THEN, come fight time at the actual staredown in the cage, Chael doesn't have the nerve to look Anderson in the eye. He looks down at the floor, looking like he's about to burst into tears like some Japanese school girl.

Coward, Liar, Cheat, Fraud, SECOND BEST.

The "real Sonnen" is the not the trash talking Sonnen, its the Sonnen that got caught using roids and charged with felony money laundering.
