It's still Penn for me. I see your point about the talent pools but you could say that against a lot of champs over the years, not nescesseraly just in MMA. you fight what's in front of you after all.

I dont even like BJ Penn

FRIENDSHIP OVER.

I think 1-2 more wins should do it. He's beaten Penn twice (urgh...the first fig...NO, I won't go there) and TKO'd Maynard. And with wins over Sherk, Griffin and Miller he has a strong case already.

If he defends twice, I think there is no doubt he'll take the spot.

I have no problem with BJ Penn but I think he's popularity clouds some peoples minds. He is a very well received fighter and he's certainly no slouch but I think the moniker "best LW ever" is someone else's for the taking.

It's hard to call someone the best ever because you never know who is crawling up the ranks to take the spot light away.

I think we should call them "the best LW so far".

BJ beat everyone they put in front of him at LW until Frankie. He laid a beating on the only other people who were called challengers to his thrown as the best at 155 pounds. You also can't neglect he moved up and beat guys at MW and at WW beat the guy who at that point was the greatest WW in history and took his belt despite being far to small for the division. BJ has only ever really lost to Frankie, Machida and GSP (he avenged every other loses). BJ is arguebly a top 3 WW right now after going to a draw with #2. BJ overratted? BJ is underrated and Edgar has a long row to travel to reach that level but in all honesty if Frankie moved down to FW and beat Aldo tommorow I would consider Edgar the GOAT at FW.

Beat Melendez, simple as that. He's already beat the previous GOAT-LW BJ twice, so all he has to do is beat the guy that many believe is actually the #1 LW in the world.

I really do think Melendez has more potential to be the GOAT-LW though, his dominations have been more impressive than Frankie's comebacks. They've both fought some of the top LWs in the world, but because of the different orgs they've literally split the LW top 10 in half and divvied up opponents; don't have a single common opponent between them so it's hard to get a real gauge on who's truly better.

I think all of your points make a strong case for BJ to be a (not the) p4p king. He's done a lot of amazing things at different weight classes but I think someone can still take the LW crown from him.

No one puts BJ Penn in their top P4P list... but other than Silva, who really has this much success hopping around different weight classes. Even Silva hasn't done the weight span BJ has.

Believe me, my post wasn't to take anything away from BJ's career as a whole, I just think that someone in this 'talent rich time' in the UFC LW division has the opportunity to make a very strong case at being the 'best LW so far'.

Jose Aldo will make his much anticipated move to LW and become the greatest LW of all time. Edgar is just keeping the belt warm for him at this time.

I would say he has to win about 3-4 more fights. It would help his case if he could finish some of them. I would say his next 4 challengers will be:

Guida/Henderson
Melendez
Pettis/Miller
Aldo

If he wins those 4 fights I would consider him the best LW of all time.
