I've never been a believer about this finishing it business. Yes it adds excitement but whats more impressive landing a shot early and finishing a guy in 1 minute or beating a guy up over 25 minutes. I know it's all opinion but although I love to see a finish sometimes I think that a 25 minute beatdown sets more of an example.

I'd like to point out... that at Lightweight, Penn never beat anyone as good as himself. Whilst Edgar beat Penn... who is as good as Penn I hear.

(yes I'm making a case for Edgar, even though Penn is my favourite fighter)

Penn's other weight accomplishments shouldn't really factor into his LW GOAT status. P4P I still have him sitting in the upper half of my top 10.

At LW Penn has beaten...

Joey Gilbert
Din Thomas
Caol Uno
Paul Creighton
Matt Serra
Takanori Gomi
Jens Pulver
Joe Stevenson
Sean Sherk
Kenny Florian
Diego Sanchez

With losses to Pulver (avenged) and Edgar.

It's a damn good list of wins at lightweight that put him at 11-3 with 9 Championship fights in those 11.

Edgar could take the GOAT spot with a few more defences (2-3) against top competition. If he beats Melendez, Bendo, Guida, then moves down to face Aldo (or Aldo up) he'll take the LW GOAT status, and probably be in everyone's top 2 P4P lists. Sky is the limit for Edgar.

I am not sure if Edgar is the best LW of all time but I really like this guy and love watching him fight. The other thread was correct in labeling him as a real life Rocky story given the heart this kids keeps showing. As far as natural talent goes he is behind alot of guys in this discussion, to include BJ and many guys fighting today. Having said that, he makes up for it w/ hard work, intelligence, and his signature attribute "HEART". I want to lean towards BJ in any "all time best LW" discussion but it is really hard to argue against Edgar considering he has beaten him twice in what I feel was/is his prime. Interesting debate but Edgar is really making mma exciting atm and UFC136 was 1 of the better events I have seen as a whole in a while. All in all, things are looking very promising in the world of mma which I am very happy about.....

Jesus. Theres not many cans at all in BJs list of defeated fighters. Never realised. Edgar, well, hes probably the number 2 Goat in the LW div. He beats everyone in LW div in my opinion. If Aldo moves up, I bet he beats him too. By decision most likely.

Yeah BJ fought and beat the best at the time. That's only his LW wins as well. No one can say he hasn't fought top competition through out his career. Joey Gilbert and Creighton are the only cans on that list.

It;s also the fact that he made the majority of them look aweful as well, it makes Edgar's win(s) look even better though also.

to me all he has to do is defend 1 or 2 more times. the record for title defenses is 3 by bj penn and edgar already has 3 (yes 1 was a draw but he still defended his belt). If he beats maybe the Henderson-Guida winner and perhaps Melendez he has to be the GOAT at LW. Really I feel like he already could be considered but after another fight or 2 it should be a lock

Favs
HW-Brock Lesnar
LHW-Forrest Griffin, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans & Gegard Mousasi
MW-Chael Sonnen
WW-All hail GSP
LW-Frankie Edgar
FW-Kenny Florian & Mark Hominick
BW-Don't really have one but I love their fights

Win 5-8 more fights in dominating fashion (aka finishes almost every fight), fight outside his weight class successfully, if he beats a champ in another division (champ, not exchamp) he has a strong argument.

Great fighter, my worry is how badly he has been beaten in the first rounds of his last two fights. Those kind of shots are the ones you can't take many of in a career and he took a bunch. That uppercut grey landed in the first I thought would end the fight, you don't see guyshuey hit like that without going out.

Edit: I was thinking p4p wise, I'm not entirely sure Frankie isn't already the best LW. Beating bj at 155 twice on it's own is huge.

Only guy that has beaten Penn twice other than Edgar? GSP...

GSP is 20-30 pounds heavier than Edgar :P

Not making a case for Edgar - just stating facts, I still believe GSP is #2

Have more fights, he's in a crowded division. And stop getting pounded like a cheap hooker in the first round of every fight.

If he defeats Henderson/Melendez/Alvarez he'll be the GSP of LW. Right now he has to sit as #1 LW clearly but "of all time" is tough, with those three top guys waiting just around the corner.

Hell if he can beat Henderson convincingly then I'd give him that title. Who else would even be up there? Wins over Sherk, Maynard, Miller, Penn, etc there simply is no one else.
