Aldo auctions off some gear for charity

Quote:
In keeping with tradition, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (20-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is auctioning off a few fight-night items to benefit his team's Nova Uniao Community Program.

Aldo has autographed his UFC 136 corner banner, as well as a Nova Uniao T-shirt, and is offering both of them in individual auctions on eBay.com.

Aldo has done the same for previous UFC and WEC title fights and has used the proceeds to purchase mats and gis for underprivileged jiu-jitsu students in his native Brazil.

Nova Uniao USA president Gustavo Dantas, who is responsible for the promotion of the Nova Uniao Community Program in the U.S., said that 100 percent of the proceeds generated from the auctions will be utilized by the program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

According to Dantas, the non-profit program is "focused on teaching jiu-jitsu to underprivileged youths living in low-income housing developments situated on the hills of Rio de Janeiro. Referred to as 'favelas,' life in these slums is hard and makes it very easy to fall into drugs, gangs, and violence. Through this program, aspiring fighters can take steps in the right path to begin their journey to follow in the footsteps of Aldo and be champions of the future.

"Organized by Nova Uniao co-Founder Andre Pederneiras, the program is currently operated in two locations: Morro Azul, with classes taught by black belt Fabiano 'Babu' Freitas and Morro Santo Amaro, with classes taught by Sengoku fighter and black belt Marlon Sandro."

Providing training opportunities for the Brazil's less fortunate children is a cause that has long been close to Aldo's heart. Prior to his professional fighting career, the 25-year-old was raised humbly in rural Brazil.

"Coming from the background and the type of childhood that I grew up with, very humble beginnings, it just makes me happy to be able to help my family," Aldo previously told MMAjunkie.com through his manager and interpreter, Ed Soares. "Now with these opportunities that are coming, I'm able to provide and help my family in many ways. It makes me feel good to do that."

In addition to the fight-night items, Nova Uniao is currently donating 10 percent of all purchases from the team's official store to the Nova Uniao Community Program.

Bidding for the items ends on Oct. 16. The T-shirt and fight banner are currently listed on eBay.com.

Aldo, of course, defeated "The Ultimate Fighter 1" alum Kenny Florian via unanimous decision at this past weekend's UFC 136 event in Houston.

Whatever views you have on BlackHouse, you cannot deny that Aldo is a cool dude

Aldo being classy. This is a guy who will never forget where he started and the hardwork he had to put in to be where he is.

I'd kill to have a pair of gloves used in an actual fight by Aldo (as long as they didn't have to cut them off after). I've got JDS signed gloves but they're 4x or something and weren't worn in an actual fight.

I used to root against Aldo simply because he was associated with Blackhouse, but I'm finding out more and more that Aldo is a really good guy.

The "new generation" of Blackhouse is full of great, talented guys without the cocky attitude of the old timers (nogs and Silva).

Although the distinction between Team Nogueira and Blackhouse is difficult now, JDS isn't even a Blackhouse fighter per se so who knows.

JDS went off my "shit list" when he cut ties with Soares. Still hoping Cain beats him because I love Cain, but JDS has my support against any UFC heavyweight not named Cain or Carwin. Machida and Aldo aren't bad guys at all either. It's jsut Anderson, and the Nogueira brothers that I can't stand.
