Cung Le upset with strikes to the back of the head

Quote:
Cung Le is hurt.

Not only because Wanderlei Silva turned his face into corned beef hash in the co-main event of UFC 139, but also because the referee did nothing to stop "The Axe Murderer" from landing strikes to the back of his head last Saturday night (Nov. 19, 2011) at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

That's according to Le, who vented earlier today on his official Facebook page:

"The back of my head hurts more than my face. The Ref needs to watch the strikes to the back of the head more..."

After a strong first round that saw Le rattle his Brazilian foe with an arsenal of flashy kicks, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion ran out of steam, allowing Silva to unleashed a flurry of knees and punches that forced the technical knockout stoppage at 4:49 of the second stanza.

When the fight was called, UFC color commentator Joe Rogan expressed his dissatisfaction with the timing of the stoppage. Le, battered and bloodied, was clinging to a leg and trying to survive.

The ref disagreed.

Fans are likely to dispute the timing of the stoppage, but no one is disputing the fact that Le was in all kinds of trouble. But did the aforementioned strikes to the back of his head have anything to do with his downfall?

Or just sour grapes?

I noticed that too and this seems to happen all the time when the fighter has his opponent somewhat rocked. Seems like Vitor always gets away with it too, happened to Franklin where he wasn't 'out' until he got hit in the back of the head, and happened to Akiyama.

I think the refs really need to watch out for this because it can be really detrimental to the well being of fighters late in their careers. You can obviously take more damage to the front of your face then the back.

I saw those. But damn it if Wandy wouldn't have finished him regardless. Cung was a sitting duck.

Who's to say how it would have turned out really.. but he did get a few illegal shots in there.

Not sure how you can call it sour grapes, but unfortunately I'm sure some people will be calling him a whiner.

He lost the fight, and I don't know if the outcome would have been any different, but I did see the shots hit the back of his head.

This isn't the first fight I've seen with accidental shots to the back of the head either -- I see it all the time -- it's unfortunate but I don't know how the ref will always catch those shots in a flurry/exchange.

Some are bound to go unnoticed... just the way things go sometimes.

his nose was a trainwreck.

Likely the same outcome -- are they supposed to take the win away from Wandy because of it or something?

I'm not sure what Le is expecting to be done here.

Strikes to the back of the head are kind of odd. They are illegal, but rarely every called outside of warnings.

He can still express his feelings of the matter.

I remember when they took a point away from Brock in his UFC debut for practically the same thing.

Good point -- I guess he's just trying to bring light to the issue. He didn't ask for the commission to review, or for the decision to be changed -- just that the ref needs to pay more attention.

It does seem to happen quite a bit, especially when a fighter takes another's back.

I find it hard to believe that the back of his head hurts more than his nose.
