Mark Munoz Discusses Wrestling Match With Chael Sonnen

Quote:
Mark Munoz was a guest on the Fight Fix with Dustin Green this week, and covered a few topics. His UFC 138 bout with Chris Leben was discussed, as was a possible opponent in the near future - Chael Sonnen. Rumors are spreading that Munoz will be meeting Sonnen at UFC on Fox 2 in January, but nothing has been confirmed yet. It turns out that Munoz and Chael already have some history though. Here's the amusing quote, followed by the full video:

"We competed in college together. He wrestled at Oregon University, I wrestled at Oklahoma State. We end up going at it and I end up beating him pretty handily. But in that, he tried to submit me in a kneebar and then changed it into an ankle lock. No, sorry, a heel hook. Not a legal move in wrestling. He tried doing that to me and I felt my ankle pop and was like ‘aah’ and I knew that he did it so that he could try to come back. I was actually beating him pretty handily. I got upset during that match and was just ruthless in that fight afterwards.

Years later we end up having dinner together and my wife is sitting at the table and she gets pretty upset, saying 'What's Chael Sonnen doing here? I hate that guy; he tried to hurt my husband.' Out of the blue, she said 'So, can you tell me why you did that?' He pretty much explained himself and… he's a good guy, man. He was like 'Can you blame me? I was getting beat!' So I guess...if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying."

Big Country beat Mir in a grappling match years before their fight as well, didn't mean much on fight night though. Sonnen's wrestling has gone from strength to strength since College, Munoz has pretty much stagnated. Sonnen has also developed his wrestling to MMA a heck of a lot better than Munoz too. Munoz's best chance is putting Sonnen away with a huge bomb. Issue is though, Sonnen has a rock solid chin, and that method of victory was Brian Stann's best hope as well. I see a domination from Chael.

Well im sure there is more to this story since it wasnt until maybe a couple years that Chael started getting proficient at Jiu jitsu. It seems unlikely that he would resort to using something he hardly knows as his first defense in a wrestling match. Im sure Chael has lost more then 1 wrestling match so did he just go around putting illegal moves on everyone??? Story sounds sketchy if you ask me. But anyway sadly for Munoz either Chaels wrestling has improved by leaps and bounds or Mark Munoz was never able to transfer his wrestling skills over to MMA.

Chael by decision. Or if he wants to really slap Munoz in the face. Chael wins via kneebar to heelhook

I think people are heavily overrating Chael's wrestling because he's fought all non-wrestlers. Name ONE NCAA or even top high school wrestler Chael has fought in his entire career?

**crickets**

The closest thing was Okami, and he is nowhere near an NCAA caliber wrestler let alone a Div I champ.

The way I see it, Chael's wrestling is so good that he can dominate all non-wrestlers (especially those without an elite guard to save them once they get taken down). BUT it only looks so much better than the other wrestlers because unlike other them he sticks to his strength, not because he's so far ahead of the other elite wrestlers.

IMO Chael and Munoz will cancel out each other's wrestling and it will come down to who is better on the feet. Kind of like Lesnar vs Velasquez or so many more wrestler vs wrestler matchups. That is a toss-up, Munoz has the power but Chael has some fairly sharp boxing.

Personally I pick Munoz in this matchup, I like his momentum, his attitude and his power more here. He doesn't yet have the hype Chael does, but his star is rising.

Man I hope you're right, and you really do have a point there. Sonnen hasn't faced any wrestlers. However Munoz wrestling hasn't look very sharp even against non-wrestlers either. He couldn't take down Okami and he struggled with Leben so that does have me a bit worried.

Chael hasn't just dominated non-wrestlers though, he's completely tooled them. He hit a takedown on Silva from his own ass. To do that to anyone at this level is just ridiculous.

Munoz wrestling hasn't looked nearly as impressive as Chaels. Maybe it just didn't transfer to MMA as well. I'm not sure.

Chael has some of if not the best MMA wrestling out there. You can dis-credit a lot about Chael, but not his wrestling. You'll lose every time if you think someone is going to out wrestle or keep his wrestling at bay.

RIP Jordan Corder. Watch over me from above brother.

lol, dude... it's a casual story being told from the perspective of his next opponent, who ends it by saying, 'He's a good guy'. How seriously do you want us to take this?

Anyway, I'm not going to say anything other than Chael dominates the 'excellent wrestler' Mark Munoz, shutting everyone up once again. He's going to make it look easy at that. How anyone can say Munoz's wrestling will cancel out Chael's when it looked so sloppy against Chris Leben and couldn't get the job done against Okami is beyond me. Don't kid yourself, Chael has evolved far beyond Munoz in that regard.

Munoz couldn't take Okami down. Just check what Chael did to him. Chael beat Yushin so bad he decided to go train with him. Munoz is not defending Chael's takedowns, and is going to be on the receiving end of a beating.
