Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz CONFIRMED For UFC on Fox 2

UFC On Fox 2 has its co-main event and it will determine the next challenger to Anderson Silva’s middleweight title.

Former title contender Chael Sonnen will meet top ten ranked middleweight Mark Munoz in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 2 set for Jan. 28 in Chicago.

UFC officials confirmed the bout for the headliner on Saturday.

Chael Sonnen was gunning for a rematch with Anderson Silva after their hard fought battle in 2010. Sonnen controlled the fight and was up on the scorecards going into the fifth and final round, but Silva was able to come back and end the fight with a Hail Mary triangle choke to retain his title.

Ever since then, Sonnen has been seeking a second shot at Silva, but with the champion on injured reserve until deep into 2012, he’ll face another tough challenge instead.

Mark Munoz will be looking to earn his first shot at the UFC middleweight title when he faces Sonnen on Jan. 28.

A former NCAA champion in wrestling, Munoz has shown steady improvements in every fight including his last victory over Chris Leben at UFC 138.

Now he has the chance to earn a shot against a former training partner and friend in Anderson Silva.

Sonnen and Munoz have actually competed against each other before in a wrestling match in college. Munoz, a stand out at Oklahoma State, defeated Sonnen, who wrestled at Oregon. Obviously the MMA game is much different, but at least for now Munoz has a 1-0 lead going into the fight.

More bouts for the UFC on Fox 2 card are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Im taking Sonnen all day long.

Is this for real this time?

Saw a vid of Chael not long ago saying he'd "be watching closely the fight on saturday night". Implying he would fight either bisping or mayhem.

Yes it's for real this time:

And so it's official. RT @ufc PC open to public Wed. 1 pm CT United Center – Chicago UFC on FOX with Rashad, Mr Wonderful, Chael and Munoz
Chael Sonnen will have to win another fight before he can get his long-awaited rematch with Anderson Silva, because the UFC has announced that Sonnen's next fight will take place on January 28 in Chicago, when Sonnen will fight Mark Munoz in the co-main event at the second UFC on Fox event.

Sonnen had been expected to face Silva -- whom he called out after beating Brian Stann in October -- but Silva is nursing a shoulder injury and apparently won't be ready for a few months. So Sonnen vs. Munoz will determine the next No. 1 contender in the middleweight division.

The Sonnen-Munoz fight matches up two of the best wrestlers in the middleweight division; Sonnen used his wrestling to control Silva for four rounds before getting submitted in the fifth, while Munoz is a former NCAA wrestling champion who is currently riding a four-fight winning streak.

A Sonnen-Silva rematch has long been viewed as the biggest fight the UFC could book in its middleweight division, but if Munoz beats Sonnen, a Munoz-Silva fight would also be big. Munoz is 7-1 since moving down to middleweight, with the only loss coming by split decision to former top contender Yushin Okami, so Munoz would certainly be worthy of a title shot if he gets past Sonnen.

The UFC on Fox 2 card will be headlined by Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis. Other fights expected for the card include Demetrious Johnson vs. Eddie Wineland, Evan Dunham vs. Paul Sass, Jon Olav Einemo vs. Mike Russow and Cody McKenzie vs. Michael Johnson.

Well, at least now I don't have to worry about that dirty feeling I'd get from rooting for Sonnen against Bisping!

That said, I think Sonnen takes it handedly. His wrestling and top control are arguably the best in MMA, far superior to Munoz. As long as he can avoid any errant triangles, he's got it in the bag.

Good, this is the fight that needed to be made.

Bisping and Mayhem aren't that good and neither guy should be fighting a top five guy, Chael would have just steam rolled either guy. Munoz is the most deserving guy after Chael, just a good fight.

Feed Bisping/Mayhem to Okami or someone.
