Dana White: "I dont know how he sleeps after that." + Age,JJ,AS,Superfight

Quote:
Dana White spoke with Brazilian website Alpha recently, and according to the UFC president, in spite of middleweight Anderson Silva‘s recent re-assertion that he isn’t interested in a fight with light heavyweight champ Jon Jones, the fight may happen before “The Spider” calls it a career.

“He’s probably the greatest fighter in history. He hasn’t lost and has been champion since 2006. I think he has two more title defenses and I do not know what he’ll do next or if he will retire,” he said. “He could end his career with a super fight against Jon Jones or George St-Pierre. He could end his career like that — fight in a different weight class. I would be happy with that. Then he could take a boat and sail into the sunset.”

Although he doesn’t think Jones’ youth would play a major factor in the fight, “The Baldfather” says Father Time and his effect on fighting skills is one of the leading causes of retirement in the sport, even amongst the sport’s best.

“Age is a shit, man. It’s the only thing you can not cheat. The fighters who become champions never finish their careers at the top. Anderson may have the ability to do this. The problem is that you never know when time will catch up with you. You are the king of the world one day, then you get in there and one day is half a second slower than before,” he explained. “And only you will know right away. Anderson is 36 years old. Jon Jones is 24. Jon Jones was in that war with Rampage. He finished the fight with swollen knees, unable to walk. Then six days later he was fine. That’s how you heal when you’re 24. But the fact is that Anderson did not get beat for a long time.”

Speaking of aging veterans, Dana said that he was disappointed that Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira didn’t finish Frank Mir when he had the chance at UFC 140 since he seemed to have the fight in the bag.

“He was two punches away from winning that fight,” White said shaking his head. “Instead he passed the guard and tried to apply a guillotine on Frank Mir. Nobody understood that. He will regret that decision for the rest of life. It was his fight. It was finished. I do not know how he sleeps after that.”
The article had a different title in mind. "Dana White: I Would Be Happy If Anderson Retired After a Superfight With Jones or St-Pierre". But to me the thing that caught my attention the most was the comment about Big Nog. I know many of you feel exactly the same way Dana White feels. But hearing the guy say "I dont know how he sleeps after that". Atleast for me made me realize how big of an error that was for Big Nog. Not just in the fight BUT for his life. Not many people have lives that possibly some of the biggest moments in your life takes place in a 15 minute window. And these 15minutes can change absolutely everything. It can make the 3 months before that worthless, it can make or break your career, it can make you extremely depressed or happy, or it could become one of the biggest regrets in your life. Big Nog is nearing the end of his career, we all know that. Those 10 seconds could possibly have been the most important in his career. This was in many ways Big Nogs last stand and could have given him one last rise to the top. One last chance to have his dreams come true. That decision to not take 1 more second to swing two more punches has possibly taken all this away from him. It must honestly eat at him. For Big Nog to look as happy as he looked in the hospital picture speaks miles and miles of his character. I cant even begin to explain how i would feel if i was Nog. Anyway... just had to vent i guess. When i put what happened in Big Nogs perspective. It kind of hit me how important that moment was for him.

Anyway.. im off to bed. Good night peepz.

Nog's just making the best of a bad situation. Like Dana said and you've elaborated, he probably made one of the worst decisions of his career, but once it's done it's done. Crying over it won't bring it back. It's just like life's other tragedies, at some point you just have to shrug your shoulders and move on.

Some people are just better or faster at that than others. I didn't expect any less of Nog, this is a guy that shrugged off getting run over by a truck and semi-disabled in his childhood and made it to where he is today.

QFT and perspective.

It was a non-title fight at the tail-end of a storied career.
Other than being on a PPV in which both he an his brother fought, relatively speaking, it wasn't that big a moment for Big Nog.

Dana would love to see the marketability of Jones sky rocket after beating Anderson Silva... Dana says it himself, "Age is a shit". I think Dana is looking to find a way to pasture Anderson in a way that promotes his new up-and-comer.

It was a moment that could have brought him one last title run. It was a moment that could have seen him ending his career on a fairy tail ending. It was a moment that could have had him fighting in 3-4 months rather then 10-11 months.

Id say it was a pretty big moment for Big Nog. This wasnt a fight that he could afford to lose like some fights when he was younger.

Considering he prided his career off his Chin and BJJ. And considering Mir was the first to stop him. And now first to submit him Of course that was a huge moment. Not a positive one, but a huge moment.

The fact that he had it in the bag and looked so good, vs. a guy who beat him. And then quickly was reversed and submitted for the first time in his career is huge.

I'm a huge Big Nog fan and that will be the toughest loss I've had to watch.

Worst way to lose knowing that you basically had it won, and then not only lost, but were submitted.

He takes a bunch of Pride in his BJJ. The loss or injuries aren't as a big of a deal to him as being submitted. At least I would bet that.

He won't look back and say damn I missed a title run opportunity. He wasn't even looking for the title, it is Junior's. He will look back and say I was one of the best ever for a long time. And I got beat by Mir twice. And he submitted me. That is something that will always hang with him and leave a bitter taste in his mouth.

I suppose those are possibilities; however, I doubt you'll find many posters here who will agree that he still has/had a title run in his gas tank at this point in his career (injury or not).
He's had a ton of wars in 42 fights. He's not just 35; he's an old 35 at this point.

Yeah, i bet he's really pissed that now he won't be able to say "I was never submitted".

In terms of the Nog situation, one quote will sum it up as far as i'm concerned :

'It is what it is'

Many fans wish they could change it, Dana probably does and Nog, more than anyone else, certainly wishes he could. But he cant. It is what it is, he made a bad decision and it cost him the fight.

To be fair though, his career is in its twighlight now and he probably wont be remembered for the Mir fight. He has already built his legacy - current fights, whilst unfortunate in this case, will not define him.
