Rousimar Palhares was one of the highlights of UFC Rio, submitting the American Mike Massenzio on the first round with his greatest coup, a heel-hook. After the bout, his coach and manager, Murilo Bustamante, talked to TATAME and claims his novice is ready to fight for the division title, something he has earning himself in the past. “I want a main event. If it all goes right, soon he’ll be fighting for the title. He’s ready”, says the BTT head-coach, pleased about the bout’s outcome. “Palhares shone, he simply went there and did what we rehearsed and perfectly”.
Perfect fight, right? How does it feel like?
Perfect fight, everything went perfectly right, like we planned it to. There’re nights when things go our way and it was one of them. Palhares shone, he simply went there and did what we rehearsed and perfectly. I’m speechless. Live on TV Globo. Need I say something more?
Of course the game plan was to take him down and submit him, right?
Yeah, that’s always the game plan: take it down where us, from Brazilian Top Team, are better. He was prepared for anything. His Boxing is better, he’s kicking very well. He’s very comfortable and he proved that during the fight.
He did a good fight at UFC Rio, you asked for a vacancy on the main card and they gave it to you. He put on a great show. What’s next?
Well, I want a main event. If it all goes right, soon he’ll be fighting for the title. That’s what we’re waiting for. He’s ready. Now it’s up to UFC to decide.
Do you believe he’s ready for a main event and, in case he gets a win like he did yesterday, then get a title shot?
I guess he’s ready for a main event and ready for anything. If UFC gives us the chance, it depends on them. I guess UFC, better than any of us, knows better. I guess they’ve seen Toquinho’s potential in all ways.
How important was this psychological work you’ve been doing with him?
It was very important. We’ve been working so he’s calm. Sometimes Toquinho gets anxious and makes some mistakes. My concern now is to work on his mind to establish a good concentration, so that he gets more focus and plays according to what he trains, do things like he trains them.
And about you? What are your plans as a fighter?
I have an open invitation for fighting at AFC in Manaus. We’re talking to them. Let’s see what happens. It’s practically agreed it’ll be on March 31st, and I’ll really be there.
Did they through names at you?
No. We’re still studying. Let’s see what we can do to put on a show.
