Bustamante wants Palhares on the main event, title shot next.

Quote:

Rousimar Palhares was one of the highlights of UFC Rio, submitting the American Mike Massenzio on the first round with his greatest coup, a heel-hook. After the bout, his coach and manager, Murilo Bustamante, talked to TATAME and claims his novice is ready to fight for the division title, something he has earning himself in the past. “I want a main event. If it all goes right, soon he’ll be fighting for the title. He’s ready”, says the BTT head-coach, pleased about the bout’s outcome. “Palhares shone, he simply went there and did what we rehearsed and perfectly”.

Perfect fight, right? How does it feel like?

Perfect fight, everything went perfectly right, like we planned it to. There’re nights when things go our way and it was one of them. Palhares shone, he simply went there and did what we rehearsed and perfectly. I’m speechless. Live on TV Globo. Need I say something more?

Of course the game plan was to take him down and submit him, right?

Yeah, that’s always the game plan: take it down where us, from Brazilian Top Team, are better. He was prepared for anything. His Boxing is better, he’s kicking very well. He’s very comfortable and he proved that during the fight.

He did a good fight at UFC Rio, you asked for a vacancy on the main card and they gave it to you. He put on a great show. What’s next?

Well, I want a main event. If it all goes right, soon he’ll be fighting for the title. That’s what we’re waiting for. He’s ready. Now it’s up to UFC to decide.

Do you believe he’s ready for a main event and, in case he gets a win like he did yesterday, then get a title shot?

I guess he’s ready for a main event and ready for anything. If UFC gives us the chance, it depends on them. I guess UFC, better than any of us, knows better. I guess they’ve seen Toquinho’s potential in all ways.

How important was this psychological work you’ve been doing with him?

It was very important. We’ve been working so he’s calm. Sometimes Toquinho gets anxious and makes some mistakes. My concern now is to work on his mind to establish a good concentration, so that he gets more focus and plays according to what he trains, do things like he trains them.

And about you? What are your plans as a fighter?

I have an open invitation for fighting at AFC in Manaus. We’re talking to them. Let’s see what happens. It’s practically agreed it’ll be on March 31st, and I’ll really be there.

Did they through names at you?

No. We’re still studying. Let’s see what we can do to put on a show.

As i mentioned in the other thread, Palhares VS Maia is a dream fight for me, that's the kind of fight that would make casual fans enjoy BJJ.

I've seen others throw names like Bisping and Mayhem in the air. Well Palhares has shown he has a great chin and recovery in the Hendo fight and the Dan Miller fight so there's no way in hell Bisping could knock him out, and i don't see Bisping being able to keep Toquinho away from him for 3 (or 5) rounds. All Toquinho has to do is get a hold of Bisping, from there he can try and slam or pull guard, it doesn't matter. Once they are on the ground it's game over.

Mayhem has high level BJJ and here is what happens when he rolls with Palhares

Him vs Maia would indeed be a dream matchup.

I'm glad to see Palhares succeed. He's from poverty (real poverty, not 1st world poverty), and even recently has had some serious issues, but seems to have had the mental strength to put himself together. Was great to see him so excited after the outstanding sub

Oh good...I spotted this out before I was going to post. That should be the matchup or even funnier against Chael or Munoz.

It seems the most logical match-up is the winner of Bisping / Maia, coming up in less than 2 weeks, enough of a turn around for June, either fighter is going to want to get another fight in, rather than wait for a title-shot.

Would they go to ground? Or would we just get a low level kickboxing match...

I wanna roll with Palhares just to see how strong the guy is. I've always pictured the perfect submission machine as a stumpy powerful wrestler type of guy. He can throw you around like a rag doll, hes damn near impossible to submit due to his log neck and short limbs, and he has the squeezing power of an anaconda/gorilla hybrid.

Edit: Maybe I wouldn't want to roll with him.

I have a sickly feeling that a Palhares-Silva fight would look just like Maia-Silva and Leites-Silva. That's the last thing the MW division needs...but I would love to see Palhares fight with the Bisping-Maia winner, that makes the most sense right now.
