Demian Maia "Brazilians shouldn't fight each other, unless it's Anderson."

"It was rumored (a fight with Palhares), but I thought there would not be any possibilities (of it happening), because he just fought, it doesn't make sense for him to throw himself into another fight right now. "Toquinho" trained a few months for this fight. Just because it was fast doesn't mean there were no wear and tears. But I don't even think about that. To be honest, the Brazilian fans should be more worried about seeing us fighting foreigners. There are (only) a few Brazilian fighters in the division and I think that, aside of the title, since it's Anderson who is the champion, the Brazilians should not face each other."

Get the **** out.

I totally agree! Also Americans and Canadians should not fight each other either, not to mention the Japanese. All we should ever see are competitions between nations unless it for championship belt. That or between races. We could have a White vs Asian card.

That's a pretty impractical standpoint for a UFC fighter to have, especially when you're from one of the bigger nations (USA, Brazil, Canada and so on)

Not wanting to fight countrymen could hurt you in the long run, it's ok to say "I prefer not fighting my fellow countrymen, but I'll do it if I have to."

- That being said I like the "Brazil vs. the world" attitude, it's interesting :p

Yea so because you were born on the same piece of rock Brazilian's shouldn't fight?

Do they deem their culture so superior to everyone else's that they should be exempt from fighting each other?

Sometimes, Brazilian fighters in the UFC are idiots.

Yes. Ever since their economy picked up in the 90s, they were grouped into BRICs by Goldman Sachs, and got the Olympics and football world championships. They've been on a roll, and are already rivaling the USians for arrogance and hubris.

Go ahead, neg me, but you know it's true.

I've always really liked Maia.

But this is stupid. I'm not usually the "pro-American" type, but I think it's ridiculous that people constantly shit on Americans and Brits for "bias" when Brazilian fans and fighters are arguably the most biased.

But since Brazil is lower on the economic totem pole, isn't predominantly European, and since most of the fighters come from "humble" origins, I guess that excuses it :)

Yes totally ridiculous for a pro fighter to not fight other pro fighters from his country. Makes no sense. If 2 guys from the same camp are contenders, they need to fight if the matchmaker lines it up. That is what being a professional means.

Meh. It would have happened if Palhares' passport hadn't been expired and he had more time.

Wanderlei and Vitor are fighting each other after doing a Brazilian TUF, so that will be a lot of Brazilians fighting each other.

Steady on chaps. This is a translation we are talking about, not a direct quote. Plus, the thread title is naughty.

All Maia might have really said is, "I would prefer not to fight other Brazilians.", which is a completely reasonable statement.

But never mind. You guys go ahead and sharpen those pitchforks. Some bloke told you that some bloke said something that you don't like!? Lynch the fecker! :sarcastic05:

Took only 28 posts for someone to came up with a reasonable pov.

Anyway, this thread title is unfortunate to say the least...

Original article title:
"Demian Maia Didn't Want To Fight Palhares Due To Lack Of Brazilian Middleweights"

This thread title:
"Demian Maia "Brazilians shouldn't fight each other, unless it's Anderson."

:dunno:

I like Maia but as almost all of you said, what an idiotic comment. I mean, didn't he have to fight his countrymen in local circuits before even coming to the UFC. I love Brazilian fighters for their aggressive and technical style of fighting but I find a lot of their comments moronic and they tend to appear to have a superiority complex (unless it's lost in translation)

But Maia, that was a really stupid comment !

Isnt it the nature of most individual sports. I could be wrong but off the top of my head i cant think of any individual sport where you never compete with ppl from the same country

but i spose your not punching them in the face either!

still disagree with maia though

Ryder Cup of UFC, lets do this thing...

Each country picks 3 HWs, 3 LHWs, 3 MWs and 3WWs.

The manager of each country seeds all their fighters from 1-3 in each weight class. They then put their seedings up against the other, having chosen blind to how the other is picking.

12 fights, 5 hour ppv, hold it on neutral ground like the moon perhaps, or maybe Alaska.
