Demian on loss to Weidman: “I believed I could knock him out and I wanted to see if I

Demian on loss to Weidman: “I believed I could knock him out and I wanted to see if I could actually do it”
Demian Maia’s performance against Chris Weidman at UFC on FOX 2 was not as good as his previous acts. The Brazilian was dominated by his opponent, couldn’t stand on his feet nor take his opponent down and was defeated on a unanimous decision of the judges. On an exclusive interview to TATAME, the BJJ black belt affirmed he was more focused on knocking his opponent out than winning the bout at any cost.
What are your thoughts about the fight?
Man, because they changed my opponent at the last minute I believed a lot my hands. I believed I could knock him out and I wanted to see if I could actually do it. I focused on that the entire fight and not focused on winning, but doing what I wanted to do. Actually I guess it’s easier fighting for the win. If I had worried about points… The guy took me down once, twice, these kinds of things.
Was this the game plan for Michael Bisping or did you decided to do it after they replaced him?
No, the game plan was completely different. Against Bisping I was getting in there and working on grappling. When they’ve changed, since I was doing fine on the stand-up, I thought I could knock him out. Then I kept trying it all the time, but I could not fit a nice coup. I couldn’t do it, I don’t know what happen.
How was the next day? You were on the first fight of FOX’s card, an important fight after a good win against Jorge Santiago. Did you talk to the UFC guys?
No. I guess there’s not much to say. I did what I had to do, I trained like I was supposed to, but I couldn’t do what I wanted to do at the time. Now I gotta train and be ready for the next one,
Bisping, who should have been your opponent, fought Sonnen and lost. Have you watched it?
Just the end, but people said it was even. There were people saying Bisping was winning, I saw it on the locker room, but I couldn’t watch it because it was right after my fight. I went there trying to do my best, to put a good show, I wanted to get there and knockout, submit, whatever. Despite I didn’t really go for the submission, I tried to do the best thing I could. I knew it was an important FOX event, but I couldn’t do what I wanted to do.
What are your hopes for the future? Fighting Bisping would be a good thing?
It would be excellent, but I’m not hoping for anything. I want to return to the trainings next week and rethink some concepts.
About the rematch Sonnen vs. Anderson, what do you thing that happens when they meet again?
The first time Anderson was the favorite, now there ain’t such thing.
Do you believe it’ll be an extra motivation for Anderson fighting in Brazil?
It could be a motivation or a pressure, right? Let’s see how he handles it.

Also, Luís Dorea (his boxing coach), revelead that:
Demian’s strategy against Weidman was to use his BJJ, not striking
Oh Demian, Demian...

Maia would have done a lot better in the UFC if he had never picked up boxing.

It's one thing to fall in love with your striking like Rampage and Hendo have done, another thing is to go down the path Maia has taken.

Maia really needs to go back to his BJJ, but in this fight i think keeping it standing was a fair tactic. Weidman's stand up has looked ok but there are a lot of holes in it.
I'd take my chances against Weidman standing as opposed to grappling anyday.

on a televised card is not the chance to go out and see if you can do something that is against your nature. he's a grappler, and elite grappler, and should not have picked that time to see if he can chance a KO

That's the thing, it would make sense if you weren't one of the best grapplers in the division, Maia is.

So, let me get this strait, you are one of the best submission artists in all of MMA and you have only ever won 1 fight because of strikes and that was 11 years ago. These facts some how give you the confidence that you are going to knock out a guy who has never been knocked out (not that he has a ton of fights, but he hasnt).
Ohhhh boy! I used to be a big fan of Mia, but since he lost by KO to Nate he just hasnt been the same fighter.

This is what happens when you get knocked out in a fight with only 1 punch thrown and then striking becomes your fear. I still think he is trying to work through that KO by doing it to someone else. Once he is willing to let it go I bet we see the Maia who first came into the UFC come back.

Well, striking was the only way he was going to win because he could not get any TDs and when taken down Weidman did a great job with positioning and gave Maia nothing to wrk with.
