Dan Henderson likely to wait for winner of Jones/Evans.

Quote:
When Rashad Evans defeated Phil Davis at UFC on Fox 2, it locked up his position as the No. 1 contender in the light heavyweight division, and assured him of the next shot at champion Jon Jones.

Unless something unfortunate happens, Evans will finally face Jones on April 21 at UFC 145 in Atlanta, but that still leaves one big lingering question.

What about Dan Henderson?

The former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion was the other name that was vying for a shot at Jon Jones after his ‘Fight of the Year’ performance against Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua at UFC 139 last November.

Henderson was originally offered a fight with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, but turned it down on the prospect that he could still get a fight with Jones.

Now that Rashad Evans has been given the next shot at Jones, it appears Henderson is happy to sit and wait for the winner of that fight later this year.

“Dan Henderson’s in a position right now where it looks like he wants to wait for Jon Jones,” UFC President Dana White said on Thursday. “We’ll see what happens with this Rashad fight.”

Traditionally, Henderson has been a fighter that hasn’t enjoyed sitting out for long periods of time, and reportedly called White asking to compete again right after his last bout with Rua ended.

Now it looks like Henderson would rather wait for his opportunity to fight for the UFC title as opposed to taking another fight for the time being.

Can't say I'm happy because I like watching Hendo fight but if he fights Machida he'll lose and Machida will still be far away from a title shot and he just fought Shogun, Rampage is fighting Bader and the other top guys are Jones and Evans.

I guess Hendo will retire if he loses to Jones?

I see him as having a lesser chance of winning than Rashad.

I wouldn't mind seeing him go against Phil Davis, truthfully. Davis' wrestling looked horrendous against Rashad, but that's because Rashad has some of the best wrestling in the UFC. I'd like to see if Davis could take down Hendo repeatedly or if Hendo would light him up w/ strikes all night. IDK i'm probably the only one would care to see this fight, but it would time up perfectly.

I think Machida and Shogun are gonna get matched up with Davis and the winner of Rampage/Bader, it's way too early and unnecessary for a third fight between those two and Shogun and Rampage's title run is pretty much over. The ideal thing for Davis imo is six months off working strictly on his speed and striking he looked very bad on the feet against Rashad.

I think we can add Lyoto's name to that list, as well

I could see Hendo doing well against Jones. He'd look to swarm and throw bombs constantly. An overhand right from him could take Jones' head off. His wresting is good enough to beat Jones also.

Can't see how Hendo would want to fight Davis after rejecting Nogueira. Davis wouldn't get Hendo down either I think.

At 205 yeah, probably.

If he ever dropped to 185 he could probably hold gold again though, don't think Rampage and Shogun have that luxury, not to mention Shogun has no knees and Rampage is close to retirement.

HAHAHAHAHAHA thank you for this.

Back on topic. I think Henderson is holding out because this fight may very well be his farewell match.

The dude is turning 42 in August and has had one the most successful careers to date.

Win or lose I think he should retire after this fight.

Reality is, if he wins he likely won't retire. He'll get that confidence you get from winning the title. He should retire though even if he does win because there is no better way to go out, then to go out on top.

Most likely scenario is that he does retire after a loss against the winner of Rashad/Jones.

I don't like fighters waiting but it's understandable with Hendo, he is old and should only be fighting the top guys and most of them are coming off of losses.
